Today Rhett will teach you how to properly assess your tree for watering and how to properly water it. Trees require a lot of care and it is important you know how to properly water your tree to make sure it thrives! The key takeaway is this:

If your observe standing water - don't water!
If your test stick is damp but you see no standing water - it's time to water!
Be sure to repeat this test every 2-3 days to make sure your tree is well taken care of.

Times to water (with hose running between halfway and a trickle):
3-10 Gallon Tree: 8-12 minutes every 2 days (unless root ball is saturated)
15-30 Gallon Tree: 20-30 minutes 2-3 times a week (unless root ball is saturated)
45+ Gallon Tree: 60-90 minutes 2-3 times a week (unless root ball is saturated)
Be sure to continue watering during winter, but not right before a freeze!

Maybe that would work on a cypress tree or a weeping willow but most trees I would expect root rot with that much moisture. I've found good success with letting the tree dry out for a day or two before a deep watering again.

depending on the tree, some can withstand being waterlogged, but most trees will suffer, that at the end looks waterlogged and will develop root rot. I wouldn’t saturate my trees like that.

Thanks. I just planted my first tree here in Northern Nevada. Sunburst honey locust.

Interesting video, but what about the air cavity that the stick leaves? Is that not a problem if you keep doing? I don't know, just asking.

How long do I need to check and water every 3 days?

But wouldn't the you rotten the root and get termites with too much water?

It seems like that much moisture would promote root rot

Something just seems wrong with this advice. Poking the roots constantly and too much water.

When I hook up my soaker hose, it seems my water hose busts a leak, regulator required. I have on lowest possible stream. Thanks

What if too much water already applied? Do I just waited out while continue doing daily cake test? Or do I need to take any corrective actions at that time?

how much is " between halfway and trickle" in gallons? I have bubblers installed and I can regulate from 1 to 3 gallons per minute. so 8-12 minutes at 1 gallon per minute? half gallon?
thank you

Thanks for the video 👍

Also another idea is water according to sunlight levels.
Adapt the watering eg
If it’s summertime obviously trees might require more frequent watering.
