The a350neo Makes More Sense Than You Think

The a350 first began carrying passengers in 2014. With its wide array of new technological advancements - including a carbon composite fuselage, advanced adaptive wings, and incredibly efficient engines - it is arguably the most advanced airliner in service today. It might seem odd, then, that rumors have begun to surface of Airbus creating an a350neo. But there's actually good reason for Airbus to consider this possibility, and it's probably not for the reasons that you think. Let me explain...

One thing I love about this channel, maybe not directly seen in this video, is that Coby is an industry optimist. Too many people hate on a specific manufacturer, plane, or think programs are failures or will get cancelled. Coby knows that the industry moves slow and has priorities for both scale and niche technologies. He doesn’t sit here and say the 747-8, a330neo, or 777x is bad just because sales are low. It’s about competition and available technologies.

One of the reasons why the Trent XWB isn't and will probably not face the same issue as the Trent 1000 is the differences in how the engine are used.

A350 wing is optimised for take-off conditions which puts less strain on the Trent XWB, whereas the 787 wing is optimised for cruise requiring more power from the trent 1000 at take-off.

Take-off conditions are extremely difficult to handle for engine manufacturers, due to the extreme conditions, heat, high energy fast rotating components and materials.

Although they both have a similar architecture they're used very differently! And what impacts the durability of the engine is not so much the design but the way you use it! Just like a car !

I'd love to see an a350 with GE9x engines from the 777x

Unfortunately this is not going to happen. Also, there has been no sign that the Trent XWB will suffer the same issue as the Trent 1000... when the Trent 1000 was launch it is a new generation engine... where as when the Trent XWB is launch, many of the issue that issue was facing Trent 1000 has been improved or fixed... so the Trent XWB is a much more mature engine when it enter services... also, as the GEnx-1B used on the 787, as well as the GEnx-2B used on the 747-8 also suffer IPT issue especially in icing conditions where at one point essentially operator need to operator avoiding icing conditions (which is essentially impossible for any given flight)... so GE engine is not at all trouble free either.

Personally I think as all engine manufacture continue to push the boundaries of their engine, you will see more and more this type of engine issue as every component and their Tolerance is essentially push to the limits.

and yet the A350 continues sell well if they were concerned they would not buy it. GE has its own problems

Remember Airbus and RR is working on a new engine

Adding a second source engine is an incredible amount of work for limited benefit, A350 doesn’t need it, it’s too busy printing dollars!

How does it matter to GE whether one plane with their engine sells or another? I'm talking about when you said that GE was reluctant to supply the a350... Wouldn't it have made more sense to diversify?

Any shot they would use the GE9x instead of the GEnx?

The A350 is the most beautiful aircraft currently in the skies, she's an absolute stunner!!

You forgot to mention that the Trent XWB has, also, been incredibly reliable on the A350 to date.

nice video but you kind of forgot the biggest engine manufacturer in your video : CFM international, which is made of GE, that's true, but also of Safran which is a huge company and manufactures a lot of engines

The U.S. vs Europe aviation competition is complex and fierce . Thanks for the clear breakdowns.
