Both 'Free-Will' and 'Omniscient' are not clearly expressed in the Bible. In fact, there are things that God clearly does not know depending on which story you are reading. So when we have dogmatic ideas that are not clearly explained in the Bible? (Cough Trinity Cough) We end up with an attempt to resolve the differences.

Hence...why there are 43,000 plus, denominations in Christianity.

So...Was Calvin right? Idk, take your pick and sound off in the comments,

This is a HOT TAKE, I get it. But I ask that you debate kindly. Especially if you consider yourself a Christian. Really really be open to researching this topic. Buckle in. This is not your typical religious or spiritual channel, I encourage questions and critical thought! After all THIS is the time for christian deconstruction. We love all and this is a queer space.

Your eye makeup and hair and outfit are SO beautiful in this one!
Great talking points too, but I really can't get over the pretty rainbows and curls.

I remember- when i still attended church- hearing a bunch of people talk about how the deterministic ideas behind calvinism comforted them. They said that they liked knowing that everything was predetermined by god, because to them that meant that no matter what, everything would turn out fine. I could never wrap my head around it, to be honest. I hated the idea that i had no free will, and i still do to be honest.
Looking back though, i think its very indicative that the people who found comfort in determinism were all rich, white, and retired. Calvinism in the modern day, to me, is something that bad people use to excuse their own bigoted behavior. To them, the homeless and queer and BIPOC are only facing punishments from a god who knows all. To them, an all knowing god will only bring goodness, so all the suffering peoples must have earned it. Its such a gross and detached way of thinking, ill never understand it.

Calvinism was heavily affected by a period of reconsiderations of philsophical ideals due to the influence and explorartion of different cultures begining to become more intertwined.

My thoughts on history is that there is often a period of internationationalism then a period of globalism. Calvinism in many ways could be taken to represent this in the sense of trying to unify and reconstruct an entity under more laws and nation like entieties rather than a more decentralized entitiy and in reaction to the encounters and new philsophical ideas introduced by encoutners within both emerging science and islamic gunpowder empires

My favorite loophole closer is to postulate that Gd and Man function in opposing time streams, with reality going from past to future and Gd going from future to past.

The result of this is that Man has free will, making decisions as time rolls along, but Gd knows what will happen because Gd saw it already.

Not an entirely original thought, mind. The legend of Merlin has him living from future to past as well.

What I never understood about predestination is why people were told to ACT like they were saved when they could very well be damned. Where is the incentive? I could be misremembering but I’m pretty sure there isn’t a “revoking” policy- where you were GOING to be saved until you acted so poorly. So why try at all?

A co-worker who was Presbyterian explained it thusly: it's like a real-life Choose Your Own Adventure. There's 1 ending But so many choices to get to the ending. And it's the choices that make the book fun or interesting or boring or next-level. It sounded as reasonable an explanation as others and more reasonable than most

Our church said that time only exists on earth because we wouldn't be able to handle seeing everything that ever will happen or has happened all at once, but that covers all the "omnis" . We could make any choice, God would see the consequences and we are already in heaven right now. Bit of a mind trip but I liked it.

Actually, the best way I’ve heard it said (and this is just an analogy, which is limited bc we are humans and we are limited) is that imagine a parade and we compared someone in the ground and in the crowd with someone watching the parade from a tower where they can see the start and end of the parade. So here, we are the ones on the ground and see the parade(life) bit by bit and God is the one in the tower where he sees the beginning and the end of the parade (life). Which is how God knows and sees all. So, we do have free will and we exert it day after day/ moment after moment; God has the bigger picture and already knows and has seen peoples decision (how they use their free will in their life)

Yes that's exactly it !
I'm a calvinist, my grandfather waq a pastor and theologist. When I was young I struggle to understand predestination but he explains it to me that way and it actually made sense ^^ also he told me introducing predestination was a way to prevent people from trying to buy their way into Heaven.
And, fun fact, I am now a physicist and my preferred theorie about the universe is the block universe, it's what make most sense to me and I think is in part because of my calvinist education ^^

I pointed out the tri-omni god dilemma during a conversation with a bunch of my friends (Roman Catholic, Episcopal, and Lutheran) with the statement, "well, if God is all knowing it already knows if we're making it to heaven or not." My husband (former Roman Catholic now Episcopal) looked at me (atheist) and said "that is awfully Calvinist of you." I just replied, "It is either all knowing or not. Not my fault if the dogma has plot holes."

I like a more closed form: god knows all that has happened and is happening, and the most likely outcome. There’s this comic I love called “Adventures of God” and there’s a an episode that basically says that there are multiple paths that can cross over with each other. It’s a comedy, and uses a dark joke in the end of why he started doing that, but it’s also implied it’s the major decisions he has as paths planned out, not the individual experiences.

How I see it is that if we were to go back and watch a part historical event, we would know what they're going to do. They have complete free will to do what they want, we just happen to know what that is. Same concept. Just because he knows who's going where doesn't mean it isn't our choice.

You just hit on my thought exactly. Since god would be EVERYWHERE and IN EVERYTHING, including TIME, forward, present, and back, inside your cells and inside your mind, knowing your thoughts, and he CREATED all that, he already KNOWS what’s going to happen to you and by you. You either believe all if this, or you don’t actually believe in an ALL KNOWING/EVERYWHERE GOD and you have just been lying to yourself and others all this time.
