You can safely mix them as well, 1:1 works great for most things needing a deeper clean than laundry detergent or soap alone can do. But definitely is a time and place to use one over the other or more of one when mixing. For towels I like using 2:1 of soda to borax. Gets them all bright but gets any hair/skin care products off or anything greasy especially kitchen and hand towels. For bad stains some oxyclean is nice to add in too (which also is safe with everything mentioned, although is pretty hardcore so I use only when needed.) For bedding and clothes often only borax as it still removes odors but I love how it brightens without effecting the dye. I wear mostly black so really dont want dye running when brightening the colours or white stripes on the non solid black items.
