Hi everyone!
Here’s a short(ish) introduction to Egyptology, answering the most common question I get asked – ‘what is Egyptology?’. I’m also sharing with you the story of the origins of modern Egyptology, involving Napoleon, a group of French scholars, and an accidental invasion of Malta!

1:14 What is Egyptology?

Rachel, thank you for taking the time to offer such a digestible definition of your discipline. As someone who is just awakening to the splendid of ancient Egypt, I’m intrigued to listen to your own experiences and viewpoint. Perhaps at one point you could make a video about “must-read” texts for we budding, albeit amateur, Egyptologists. In my case, I’ve found a copy of Alan Gardiner’s Grammar (spectacular), and it was great to hear your description of the 24-volume set published in the early 1800s. Is there a particular text that you feel we all ought to know about? Thank you for everything!

Great channel Rachel. Don’t forget to *at least* mention the fascination with connection of Egyptology with known & Biblical history. Whether you like the connection or not, it was an early & prevailing interest.

I’m fascinated by correspondences including but not limited to Rohl’s with other neighbouring civilisations. Not all professional Egyptologists (including one here in Melbourne) consider his work unhelpful or uninteresting.

The Bible does provide a very ordered, continuous, partly religion-agnostic historical framework letting us try and tie things together going back to 700BC ish and likely further, to 2000BC at least especially in Rohl’s case with more speculation the further back it goes.

As far as the various foreign groups that took over Egypt. Is there any info that can tell us how much these people changed the makeup of the ancient Egyptian population? How many of those foreign groups settled in Egypt? What were their numbers in comparison to the native Egyptian population?

Thanks for doing this. Keep it up, it's good work. Can you do a video on the link of md ntr and Bantu languages, if you can? I hear there has been resistance from colonial minded scholars to support the link.
