What price points have you tried or want to try with your own games? Did you start with free?

Seems like a good guideline. My Steam game Avalon fit the 10 to 15 range and was priced at 9.99 at launch. One major component missing for me was marketing. I still got much positive feedback and dedicated players through time but could have had a much larger following. So to other devs, don't miss this critical step prior to your game's release.

I'm using something a bit different, based on my 25 years of game dev. My current game is free to play, but I sell DLCs. Right now, in Early Access, I sell one purely cosmetic DLC, explicitly labeled as "if you want to support the development". People do buy it, despite the only thing it adds is a few beautifications. In the near future, I plan to add a content DLC with more levels to play. The free game is fully playable, and the DLC is for people who enjoyed the game and want to play more. I can see a variation of this bringing back the old shareware concept, where the first one or two levels were for free and then you could buy the full game. I've always had great success in making games where the majority of the game is free, but there are optional parts you can buy. If you make it fair (i.e. NOT pay-2-win) then people love the concept and I always got many more sales than I expected. Right now, my cosmetics DLC at $5 has paid already for all the assets that I bought for the game.

Nice video, could you talk about Steam discount strategy in the future? Some games like rimworld and Factorio almost never do discount, but they have like 95% positive review and stuff. Some other game had a mix on day one and starts 10% discount right after

I think it's either people not being educated or just plain sick that people would complain about any price $15 or under if they're in Europe or the USA to be honest. People don't understand the level of work that it actually takes even to make a simple 2D product.

@Code Monkey

We think our game is best at tier 3 price range but we would never add in-game store items.

What about best platforms to release your game?

Would you consider a $1-2 game to be fitting for the first game ? I’m making a 2d platformer with a twist so I know that market is saturated and it probably won’t be the next Celeste, but I would at least like to hopefully payoff that steamworks direct fee.

With the sort of game I am working on that is very similar to Angels with Scaly Wings, would you say that a price tag of $9.99 but seems this is my first game, so I will drop it to $4.99 in order to make sure my fan base will enjoy my game! Oh, by the way, @Code Monkey, would you be interested in maybe trying out my game and doing some sort of video on your YouTube channel, if not I understand! 🐉

@Code Monkey

If steam allows it, we hope to offer our EA free then once it's out of EA, then we hope to charge between $10-$15. If for whatever reason steam will not allow that, then we might have to go with a price of about $3-$5 for EA then after, we then charge the $10-$15 mark once the game comes out of EA. We always will take feedback regardless of whether it was mixed reviews or bad reviews.

It seems like about $5 would be good for my tactical RPG, or 6-7 and have sales often
