★★ WHAT THIS VIDEO IS ABOUT★★
In this video we are going to look at the IPA - the international phonetic alphabet. Yes, that’s right: the alphabet with many funny symbols, each representing a sound.
/heləʊ ɑ: jə redi tə lʊkæt ðə ɑɪ pi: eɪ/
…. This was IPA ‘Hello, are you ready to look at the IPA?’

You are going to learn about the history of the IPA, the parts that make up the IPA - the 107 letters for sounds (consonants, vowels and diphthongs), 31 diacritics to show phonetic detail and 17 suprasegmentals (e.g. : - to show vowel length). You will learn what the IPA is used for and in which professions people use it. At the end we are also going to talk about the SAMPA and we will look at phonemic transcriptions of SAMPA and IPA side by side. Please note that this video gives you a general overview of the IPA, not just the phonemic chart for English.

If you want to learn the IPA in detail to transcribe in English, check out my other videos on consonant sounds in IPA, vowel sounds in IPA and diphthongs in the playlists below - all for British English.

Hello billie!
Really you are an amazing teacher. No doubt your teaching power is so sophisticated. But now I'm suffering to understand "Semantics".
Would you mind to help us by giving your helpful vedios? Or any suggestions for us to understand?

Billie, thank you so much for this super useful video. Could you please make a video comparing RP and GA IPA? I have trouble mixing British and American English and I think lots of English students feel the same. Or maybe you could recommend some resourses to help with this issue. Thank you so much. Your channel is AWESOME!!! 🥰🥰🥰

This is the sound system of the so-called 'Received Pronunciation' or RP, for short. It is the standard pronunciation and popularized by Daniel Jones in the early of 20th Century. In Dutch, we had 'Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands' (ABN). In German, we had 'die deutsche Bühnenaussprache', standardized by Theodor Siebs in 1898.

There's something I'm confused about if I may ask. Does English IPA very accurately capture the pronunciation of words? It doesn't seem to do so to me at the nuanced level. Example:

/bid/ [bead]
vs.
/bit/ [beat]

The /i/ vowel sound doesn't seem the same between the two, as "bead" seems to have a slightly more elongated vowel than "beat", like "b-eee-d" vs. "b-ee-t" when spoken by human speakers. Yet I can't see how that's captured in the IPA pronunciation, unless we're to consider the pronunciation of each individual vowel sound as potentially varying based on the consonants around it.

Hello again. I still don't quite get the difference bw phonetic and phonemic. The phonemic chart is made up of the same symbols as the phonetic alphabet. So why use two different words? Thank you.

Dear mam, would you do a video on poetic meter. Especially one regarding how to understand exactly when a monosyllabic word is stressed or unstressed in a verse.

IPA is not only for English. It can be used for German:
[ɪç ˈhaɪsə ˈrama. ɪç ˈkɔmə aʊs ɪndoˈneːzɪən. ɪç ˈvoːnə ɪn dʒaˈkarta. ɪç ˈliːbə foˈneːtɪk. ɪç mɑːk ˈdɔʏtʃ. ɪç ˈfɪndə diː ˈdɔʏtʃə ˈʃprɑːxə diː ˈʃøːnstə ˈʃprɑːxə deːr ˈvɛlt ‖]
