Показать описание
The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a set of phonetic symbols that represent speech sounds in written form. Developed in the late 19th century, it is used by lexicographers, foreign language students, teachers, and other language professionals.

Is it necessary to know it to learn pronunciation? In this video, I answer this question asked by Sonia.

I have started to learn the IPA for 2 weeks, and I really enjoyed the experience, I think it's incredible to know how we use our mouth, our tongue, the air and so much more to produce sounds, I've been more aware of the different sounds In English and even in my native language. It's incredible!!!

I use International Phonetic Alphabet regularly as of adolescent, and yes, it helped me a lot in pronouncing everything. When I think about it, it should be taught in school in my opinion in order to help the students know how to pronounce each word. Another option is to make videos about the phonetics for TV channels that are for kids, like Hop channel in Israel.

I love IPA. It makes everything simpler. However, I'm aware of the alternative pronunciations that some words have and the sounds that oftentimes get dropped. Whatever may happen when two sounds collide, I still find IPA extremely useful, but I agree with you that each person must use what they feel more comfortable with. I have many friends who speak with a near-native American accent (which is MY personal goal to acquire), and they got it just by imitating native speakers, not by learning IPA. I personally rely on both of these methods.

I always check the phonetic transcriptions in the dictionary. It's much easier and more accurate.
And, I think it would be of great help for learners because I see in my classes, sometimes, that they hear /e/ sound as /a/ like the first vowel in "seven". So if they know the IPA they can make sure how's the sound pronounced exactly.
By the way, TNX a million for your wonderful videos. I always get good vibes from you.🌹🌹❤️❤️

IPA rocks for knowing the pronunciation of words of any language, not just English. If you have a physical dictionary like in the olden days, that's the only way to know how to pronounce a word. The IPA is by the word. People are too spoiled today and just use the internet, but they might not always have access to it.

Seeing it with the mind of a retired electrical engineer (engineers have a somehow weird mind, you know 😅), I would have LOVED to have IPA when I studied English 50 years ago. I think for engineers and scientists, IPA should be the first thing to learn in English. It is much better to know English have sounds you do not have in your language, not have to guess them, and really learn them.

Online dictionaries these days typically use recorded sound (i.e. click on the speaker icon) to demonstrate the correct pronunciation of new or unfamiliar words, and in my own personal experience this has since made the need to remember the IPA far less important.

Well, Later on I discovered this system of pronouncing the words right, so I find it very beneficial to better pronunciation .
And always I used it to correct most of my pronunciation of words.

To improve our pronunciation in English it's necessary to listen and pay closer attention to the accent and stress syllables. Imitation is a key because we are adapted to the pronunciation of the words in our native language and we need to adapt to new sounds.

I believe that the best way to learn English is through Listening, repetition, and imitating native speaker... that is my opinion

The eyes and nose are different organs. When you couldn't hear the voice file directly, you needed the IPA symbol to represent the sound in advance.
Like playing music by looking at the score sheet. However, in modern times, you can easily hear the music performance file itself.
Learn sound with your ears. Don't learn with your eyes. Like you don't want to learn about a picture by narration.

I have friends that say it is important and others who don't. But in my point of view, it could be used to polish your pronunciation if you are intermediate or above. I am a life learner, then I like to be corrected!

I've used this system for lots of years, and I'm so glad to hear that you think it can be helpful. My former coach told me it was a Martian system that I had to forget about. It blew my mind.

I was trying very hard to learn English without GRAMMAR and not spend time in sitting in any English Class.
☆•☆But, I recommend to learn in the right ways as soon you can if you needs to find a job.
20 years later here I don't speak and write English properly.
☆•☆ IPA: to me is for people properly Spock English.
I hope I gets to the point.
