Intels hubris was their downfall. The saying of "too big too fall" wasn't the case for Intel. Didn't help with Intel fabs lying to the design team, and what they got was delays. 10nm was especially bad.

What went wrong was Intel got incredibly stagnant when AMD was barley fighting by with Bulldozer. Instead of trying to keep innovating they just kept releasing the same CPU with slightly better gen over gen performance. With at best for consumer CPU is 4C/8T over and over again. Once AMD got its competency back with Ryzen, Intel could not reliably compete. Zen 1 was the shot across the bow and Intel dident know what to do.

I'm still running an intel i7-4790k in my current rig.

However, when I finally decide to build again, my next one... may not be intel.

Additionally, it also... may not be Nvidia.

So glad to see you around! My first family PC was an Athlon XP 2000+ and by that time (2002), it kicked the sh*t out of Intel's Pentium 4. After the release of core 2 duo / core quad and the following "i" series, it was a constant downfall for AMD, untill they had the Ryzen series released. I got myself a very cheap i5 12600KF one year ago, but my next build will definitely be based on Ryzen.

I first learned the name Intel when I got an IBM compatible clone in 1988. My current laptop has a Core i5, and it's fine, but my gaming rig has a Ryzen 5 7600X. Love it!

I always thought the next sweet spot in CPUs was 8 core 16 thread and when AM4 dropped I jumped on the 1700x. I have a 5800X3D now and I didn't even need to change anything else on my system other than the actual CPU. The upgrade path for Intel is brutal when you have to change almost everything. AMD just saw what gamers wanted and went after them.
