How to speak on camera like a pro. Bryan Toder Advice, Training
If you do video or want to do video, realize that talking to a video audience is a LOT different than talking to a live audience…
…stay tuned…!
Hi, I'm Bryan Toder—The No Fear Guy—and as you can see, I like doing video.
But, it took a while to get the hang of talking to the camera, as you might imagine.
You see, when you are talking to a live audience, you have live reactions, you can see expressions and even feel the mood of the audience.
With video, it's just you and the camera. That's it!
Here's what to do when you are making a video like this one. And this is for using pro equipment, your desktop or your mobile device… the advice is the same.
First, you need to pretend that you are seeing one person behind the camera. If you need to, stick a photo behind the camera and talk to that. (Eventually, you won't need it anymore.)
But, it's important to actually talk to your audience, which will (almost always) be one person watching your video.
Just like I am talking to you now, speak to them one-on-one.
Make sure that you are relaxed and making any facial expressions that you would normally use if you were just talking to your friend or a colleague at work.
This may take a little practice on your part. And, if you have a mobile phone—and you probably do—start making practice videos with it.
Or, sit in front of your computer and make some practice videos on that.
The hardest part of this is getting used to seeing yourself, but do it anyway. Then, have your spouse or friend let you know if you seem natural or stilted.
Remember to smile, too.
