I recently purchased a new CRAFTEX CX709 Metal Lathe and a CRAFTEX CX605 Mini Milling Machine to complement my small engine shop. However since I haven't used one since High School I do need all the advice I can get can from my viewers who know more than I do when it comes to using one of these!

Also any advice on any tooling I should buy to get me started is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance for all your help!
These tools were purchased at Busy Bee in Barrie Ontario Canada.

Knock-off aloris style quick change tool post and all the tool holders you can justify. Carbide insert parting off tool. Mag base dial indicator and a nice set of digital calipers. Have fun!

"This Old Tony" has a lot of vids on both use and making tools, plus they are real funny. "Abon79" has many on use and some sharpening, making tools, but u'll feel small, seeing him work on huge lathes and mills. Both on YouTube. I hope to some day have a mill and lathe. Til then I'll have to watch others and hope it'ld be ready if I get them.

I 2nd This Old Tony on YouTube, he seems to have a wealth of knowledge and often does little colabs with fellow YouTubers.

Looks good, reminiscent of my old Harrison. That Safety switch/chuck guard wouldn't last long in my workshop though. Lots of engineers on youtube show what you need to know but just follow your instincts which are good. Just build up your lathe tools as you need to get them.
Get cheap starter set of HSS lathe tools, Knurling Tool (Clamp), Centre Drills, Tailstock Tap & Die Holder and a decent grinder wheel/dressing tool for your bench grinder to sharpen everything. Good Luck.

A great addition to your Shop. A magnetic base Dial Indicator would be a good addition if you don't have one. Brake Kleen is a good grease remover. You will need inside and outside calipers as well and a little pot for cutting lube.

My top two recommendations for YT machining vid producers for the information you seek:
-Keith Fenner= hundreds of videos, full time machinist, applied use topics for all machine equipment
-ThisOldTony= pro/hobby mill and lathe use, has some very good instruction videos for tooling and accessories

Hey I just ordered the exact same lathe . I wanted to ask if you knew the dimensions at the base of the stand so I can get the dollies setup before the machine gets here

The small plate on the bottom layer of the left cabinet is a blank adapter plate that can be mounter on the spindle face, and be machined in place to fit different registers on different chucks that you will add. I would say a 6” or 8” 4 jaw independent chuck would be way more useful than the 3 jaw self centering chuck that came on the machine. You can use the 4 jaw for Anything.

just found this video by searching after looking at busybee sale catalog. They have a cx615 combo lathe and mill on sale. My son-in-law is a machinist and has made some parts where he works. He's just changed jobs and is now working at veritas (lee valley) so won't probably be able to do his own stuff. My wife and daughter would jointly kill me if I bought that unit since I'm not a repair shop . Especially since I bought him the 1400 craftex table saw this summer.

First thing I bought for my lathe was a quick change tool post along with some tool holders. It makes tool changes effortless. You can find them on eBay. Good luck and have fun!

Two flute mills for keyways. Four flute will pull off center and you're screwed. And tighten the end mill up good or it'll screw into the work. Did that on my first milling job. Long ago.

I would get a gallon jug of Way Oil to lube machine. I'm no chemist, but I've seen lots of people say that is the only thing to use. It's a thinner oil and has rust prohibiter in it. Plus a mixture of gear oil and transmission fluid is going to stink to high heaven! Also, get some little divider bins to put your tooling in. I cringed when you dumped that box full out on the bench. That's a fast way to chip and dull your cutters before you get a chance to use them. However, you did just earn a new subscriber. Great video!

Nice. Im a machinist and a hobbiest. Have a manual mill in the garage and about to get a lathe

As far as the mill, maybe get some more collets for milling, it is not recommended to ever mount a mill in a drill chuck. I was a machinist for 40 years and I could help you spend alot of your money, but you know best what you need. Great to see the machines in your small engine shop. Have fun.

I second another viewer's recommendation of the channel "Blondihacks." Quinn (the host) has some really clear and structured tutorials that are specifically focused on smaller lathes and milling machines. Plus she's funny as heck.

Congrats Dony, you are going to feel very good about having these new tools. These with a welding machine, not much you can't make. You will be making a lot of tools to make other things with.
