Just a note; the Farmer's Markets on Oahu are a really good source for fresh local produce. They can be extremely reasonably priced especially if you hit up smaller ones with limited hours. Also of note: the parking scams on the North Shore. The signs are confusing and if there is any type of event, you are highly likely to have your car towed and impounded with a cash demand. We've seen this multiple times and have seen signs moved to justify the tow.

I got a good chuckle from the rooster solution! As soon as you mentioned it I thought of HuliHuli Chicken!!
On a serious note, we have visited the islands more than a dozen times. We contemplated living on one of the islands for years now. Most of your points wouldn't prevent us from moving. Where we live the gas and food prices are higher, real estate prices are similar and we are used to having fewer options (we live on an island too) What is stopping me now is the regulations and the associated costs involved. I agree that there also needs to be diversity for business. Relying on tourism isn't the answer.

How the hell do you hide a stolen car on an Island?
