The other challenge we faced, that wasn't mentioned, are the other patients at "regular" psychiatric hospitals. Our son was placed at an acute care psychiatric hospital due to serious concerns for safety. We told him that's why he was placed there. The patients were informed that his "brain works differently" and to ignore his echolalia. But the staff were unable to protect him despite their best efforts. 2 adolescent patients ran into his room and assaulted him only 4 days into his stay, and we had to remove him for his safety.
It accomplished nothing except adding 1 more trauma for him to perseverate on. His anger about the assault was taken out in his family and there's still no solutions for obtaining appropriate healthcare for him.

My son is essentially aging out of any adolescent help/care as he turns 18 this year in December. This video pretty much nails dead on a lot of the issues we are experiencing. Are there resources for my son who is turning 18? He attends a special needs school but needs other forms of intervention or assistance

The most important thing all parents, teachers, DLS/BHPs and other licensed professionals should ALWAYS remember to do is to ALWAYS ASSUME COMPETENCY, no matter what someone’s behavior or level of language skills happen to be. Getting it wrong, is just too expensive and cruel.
