I used to be big into aquariums. Like big.

I noticed this phenomena in salt water aquariums as well. Not with salmon as food but with food being on the substrate. I was always told that many species of fish (like tangs, some damselfish, some angelfish, etc) are hesitant to eat food off of the bottom because of the parasites that come along with constantly eating food off of the ocean floor. Certain species don’t care as much or are more resilient or whatever which is why you’ll see bottom feeders not care at all.

Anyway, might be way off but interesting to note if true.

Its because Apex predator loins like Salmon dont exactly fall off their sides randomly. Its only through human intervention that Salmon can even be tasted by little reef fishes.

They are accustomed to tiny morsels left behind by sharks hunting medium sized fish. They probably dont even have color receptors in their brains for “pink” because they dont normally eat salmon lol

My theory is the fish with the bigger mouths come over and rip the meat apart and the ones with smaller mouths eat the little particles it releases so essentially those fish that were first hovering relied on the bigger more violent fish to tear up little pieces. Once it was sufficiently torn up and there was a good line of violent fish the small mouth fish could just continually eat.
