I wouldn't say 85mm is the most flattering focal length for portraits. It can work well but it isn't the only game in town. If I was going to generalise, for a pure portrait I'd say something in the 100mm to 135mm range is better.

Are the Backgrounds the same? Just seems to be too contrasty a background in A for a portrait

Unfair comparison.
Backgrounds changed and hence the focus on the subject changed due to color isolation and contrast.
I liked tha A, as what B gave is just extra calories😂

I guess 50 mm is the most matching with human eye, not 85 mm
