Before discovering heavy metal, Araya spent his teenage years playing in cover bands that would perform hit songs of that period, so yeah, I guess he can play bass. And in different genres, too. But he knew what Slayer needed, and delivered it.

Not only is he playing some extremely fast thrash metal, his vocal lines have a rhythmic cadence to them. He also sings double time on a lot of songs. Give it a try and you'll figure out why his parts don't sound like Cliff Burton. Cliff Burton wouldn't have sounded like Cliff Burton if he had played bass and been the singer in Slayer. He had great instincts, and would have known that less is more. The songs would have been way too busy with complicated bass lines.

Listen to the bass lines on Show No Mercy or Hell Awaits, then you will know Tom can play. He can also get funky. He actually plays the 3rd harmony with the guitars on At Down (Dawn) They Sleep.

Tom Araya is a great bass player, he knows his place, but I've heard some isolated tracks that were INGENIOUS, the man knows what's a bass player job in a band and that is just a plus. Plus I love how he plays always much more punk style. All in all great bass player

Someone has to hold it all down while KFK, Lombardo, and Jeff showed their bonafides. Playing the rhythm part while doing main vocals gets bonus points.

Tom definitely improved in his playing when it came to live shows. In more recent live videos you can see his bass work being more precise and doing more than the isolated tracks.
