I always tell people, Vauthry missed his calling in life. After fleeing Eulmore he put together his little sanctum on Mt. Gulg in, what.... a week? And you may or may not like his aesthetic, but by God the man had a stylistic vision and he stuck with it. Different time and place, he'd have been the best interior decorator the First had ever seen.

You gotta admire his resolve in a way. Once the light surges and he transforms, he sees it all as a trial *HE* must undertake, and then accepts it head on.

I love the symbolism in the name innocence because vauthry IS innocent he was turned into a monster before he was ever born corrupted before he ever had a chance

I really like the bait and switch they hit you with when it comes to Vauthry's transformation and how much it makes sense. When it happens to Tessleen, she becomes a malformed monster with tears streaking down her face, like she is in horror of what she has become.

But Vauthry, who in this world is "Innocence, " becomes beautiful because by the First's current paradigm, he is "free of sin."

The one who ran a hospice for those infected by the light is a beast, while the one who imprisoned people and turned them into literal food is the angel.

You know? if think about it, his name, Innocence, really fits. Heavy spoilers here, but if you're in this comment section I assume you don't care: Vauthry was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was imbued from birth with godly light that me might lead the whole world into the blissful sleep of oblivion. He never saw any of his actions as wrong, he never understood the consequences of his decrees. He was a big fat man-child that thought it was his duty to lead man to "paradise". In a perverse, twisted sense, he was truly Innocence itself.
