How you can help save the bees, one hive at a time | Noah Wilson-Rich

Bees are dying off in record numbers, but ecologist Noah Wilson-Rich is interested in something else: Where are bees healthy and thriving? To find out, he recruited citizen scientists across the US to set up beehives in their backyards, gardens and rooftops. Learn how these little data factories are changing what we know about the habitats bees need to thrive -- and keep our future food systems stable.

Very interesting. Leaves me more questions than answers. But is a good aproach to protect biodiversity through bees! Thanks.

I have a huge bumblebee bee who is "after" me on my back porch at a certain time EVERY day.I refuse to kill him. I just go out front! I dont think MOST people actually realise just how IMPORTANT that bees actually ARE!

Isn't the number one cause of bee diseases the fact that we take their nutritious honey from them (which they make for themselves to eat over the winter months) and feed them sugar water instead, which is severely lacking in the nutrients they need?

The other problem is, we manage the honeybees and because this we also create more hives. What I am trying to say is, there would not be this much honeybees if we not get involved. So areas would not be saturated so much with bees and in the natural way would not be this much loss because the hives would be more apart from each other. The diseases would not spread that easy between hives and more food per hive in a certain area. The biggest problem here, the native bees got because they are not managed and the overpopulated areas of honeybees take over their area, specially in North America because the honeybees are not native.

This is nice to have a productive thing to do about this, versus just the problem which we are all aware of by now..

Great work sir. Really honey bees are have a vital role in the food production all over the world. The technology of keeping bee hives in the homes and farmer really would help more food production for this exploring population in the world. Really nice and great work.

Anyone doing this in Europe? I would love to attract more bees but it would be even better if I knew what plants are needed locally vs what I think they want in general
