How to Tune a Guitar

Here's how to TUNE your guitar to Standard Tuning: E - A - D - G - B - E.

All of the lessons in this Beginners Course are in standard tuning, so now we need to learn HOW to tune with the aid of guitar tuners.

We can remember the open notes of the standard tuning guitar by using a mnemonic, such as:

Elephants And Donkeys Grow Big Ears...or a personal favourite of mine; Eddie Ate Dynamite Good Bye Eddie.

Engage the guitar tuner, play each string at a time while watching the tuner and simply turn the tuners in the direction that raises or lowers the pitch until it's on the correct note. A good method to follow is taking our time firstly but then always tuning up to pitch, meaning starting below/lower first and tuning up to the desired note.

I'm so old I used to tune my guitar using the dial tone from a landline phone! LOL. It's (almost) a perfect A.
Technology is good/fast today but life was much better/simpler back then

I always tune my acoustic to James Taylor's settings. Sounds a lot better. Tune the strings a couple of cents lower
high E -3 Cents
B -6 Cents
G -4 Cents
D -8 Cents
A -10 Cents
E -12 Cents

I needed this! Thank you! Sounds so stupid but I feel that not being able to properly tune my guitar has held me back from picking it up and playing. I easily get frustrated that 'my sounds' don't sound like the same sounds you're making 😂
Now I shouldn't be going wrong and have no excuse not to pick up the guitar and play!

Andy what’s your opinion on tuning apps ? I use the Fender tune app and seems pretty spot on but are physical tuners better ?

Is it normal for every time you pick your guitar up it needs tuning? Using good qaulity strings, guitar is new ( also did it with an old knock about classical I had)
