The James Webb Space Telescope has revealed stunning new details about star formation in the farthest reaches of the Milky Way, specifically in two massive molecular regions called Digel Clouds 1 and 2. These clouds, over 58,000 light-years from the galactic center, are rich in hydrogen and helium but contain very few heavier elements, making them ideal for studying early star formation conditions. Webb’s powerful instruments have captured high-resolution images of young stars, known as class zero protostars, still in their infancy. These protostars are surrounded by thick clouds of gas and dust, with jets of material being ejected, providing insights into how stars evolve. The discovery of a subcluster of stars in Digel Cloud 2 further highlights the dynamic and complex nature of these regions. Webb's findings offer a glimpse into the processes that shaped our own galaxy in its early stages.
