Magnus Carlsen Vs. Kasparov

Magnus Carlsen was only 13 years old here.

A rapid game between the past and future world champion? 2 of the worlds greatest players indeed. I wonder what would happen if they were to play now.

Interesting that sometime after this, Kasparov started coaching Carlsen for a while.

Carlsen: Makes a standard opening move.
Kasparov: Aw shit, kid’s good.

The fact he stood up to watch other player’s game in the middle of his game is a BOSS MOVE.

Kasparov arriving late and letting his clock run while he adjusts his pieces reminds me of all those clips of Magnus doing the exact same thing now that he's champion. Makes me wonder if Garry's behavior inspired Magnus.

Magnus recently said in a podcast that he was insanely intimidated by Kasparov. He said I was studying so many opening variations only to realise that Kasparov is the one who invented them. And I as a beginner don’t know if I’m more impressed by Carlsen or Kasparov 😂

My dumb ass thought the comment section was being sarcastic about this kid being world champion, turns out he really is the actual world champion 💀

Magnus getting up during the round to look at other matches at 3:20 is simply legendary.

Many people seem to think Magnus leaving momentarily (Kasparov gives him a look over it) was part of some mind game. In a recent interview he said Kasparov was taking too long and he just got bored, deciding to check out some of the other games going on.

Carlsen: Plays one of the most common opening moves
Kasparov: Already sweating

Obviously Kasparov had an immense pressure not to lose to a 13yo and #700 in the world. BUT... damn did Magnus as a kid made him shit bricks during the whole game. The amount of confidence at 13 years of age from Magnus is outstanding. 3:13 I think Kasparov did that move on purpose since Magnus wasn't looking at the board at the time. Little did it work when the kid came back running to make his move knowing exactly what he had moved and making Kasparov even MORE nervous. Kasparov was terrified of 13yo Magnus!

A draw, sure, but this was a victory for young Magnus. I mean come on! Kasparov playing mind games by showing up late and taking his sweet time all while during the match Magnus casually just walks away to observe the other matches while Kasparov is clearly realizing that he will not end up beating a 13 year old! Absolutely amazing and a clear glimpse into the future of Chess and its World Champion in the making.

That extra loud click from Kasparov when Magnus was walking around tho 😂

Favorite part is Magnus getting distracted, walking around, Kasparov heavy hits the timer, Magnus hurries back and makes a move immediately.

Fun fact: One day before this game and one day after this game there have been matches between these two as well and kasparow beat magnus in both of them. He also ended up winning the entire tournament.
