When Kasparov played Karpov was the only other player over 2700, now the top 30 grandmasters are over 2700, this is because the players today have so much more training material because of online play and it's much much easier to research lines. Many believe, when judged for inflation, Kasparovs highest rating is more impressive than Magnus'
