Germany's FASTEST Regional Train - DB München-Nürnberg-Express Review

Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report on my channel.

In this video I will be travelling on-board the DB München-Nürnberg-Express, the country's fastest regional train, from Nürnberg Hbf to München Hbf.

Unlike most other regional trains in Germany, that have a maximum speed of about 160km/h (100mph) or less, the München-Nürnberg-Express is hauled by long-distance DB 101 electric locomotives from DB Fernverkehr (InterCity), running at up to 200km/h (125mph) on the Munich-Nuremburg high-speed lines.

Find out what this unique service was like, before these trains were replaced by modern (but delayed) double-deck Škoda trains somewhat recently.

Enjoy the video. :)

Yep, I can confirm these new Skoda trains replaced the old ones about a year ago and they run fine without any major problems

8:14 Yooo you even visited my hometown! To be honest, I never really noticed these trains stopping, just the newer double-decker ones. Cool video 👍

It's a shame that this older video has no spoken commentary. Maybe that is a feature which you added later? I'm watching these in reverse order, because YT will not let me stream them chronologically with this browser. So I'll not know until the next (previous) video.

Beside the speed there was an other maybe even more important reason to use old IC stock. The part from Nueremberg to Ingolstadt requires preassure tight (don't know if that is the correct term, in german: druckdicht) coaches. It is required when passing by an 300km/h ICE within a tunnel.
When starting the service DB had no regional rolling stock meeting that requirement. So they used the old Long distance stuff.

Those coaches have now been transferred to Baden-Württemberg and serve on the brand new Wendlingen-Ulm high speed line. They are sandwiched between two 200kmh Siemens Vectron because the old control cab does not have the ECTS mandatory for the new line.

The reason this train was created is also of a political dimension: Bavaria consits of four (or, depending on your count, five) "tribes", of which the Altbayern ("Old-Bavarians", the entire south-east including Munich) and Franken (Franconians, around Nuremberg) consider themselves the most important, so quite a lot of effort is taken to appease the Franconians by the Bavarian government (partially due to fear of secession, partially due to traditions). The only reason Nuremberg has a full-fledged U-Bahn (as one of only four cities in Germany, all other networks count as Stadtbahn or "Light Rails") is because Munich also has one.

This train was meant to create a fast and cheap connection between Munich and Nuremberg, in order to make fast travel outside the ICE/IC-system (and fare) possible. It was the joy and pride of one of the former Bavarian governments, and while it has somewhat declined from its haydays, it still plays an important role connecting the two "capitals".

Yeah, would be nice if you drive with the new trains. :)

Ironic that the newer locomotives and double deck carriages that are replacing the 101s and IC coaches are slower (160 km/h), simply regional stock rebranded and painted in IC livery

Note: if there is more than 2MPH flucuation in speeds than he isnt driving it with AFB, or literaly autospeed

1:49 That traction motor is music to my ears. It's a shame that the newer ICE trains are a let down compared to the ICE 3.

That is pretty fast. German trains including the ICE trains are very fast.
