HRT used for menopause linked to dementia, new study finds

The use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to ease the effects of menopause has been associated with a higher risk of dementia, a new study has found - but the link between the two may not be down to the treatment.

The nationwide study from Denmark, published in the British Medical Journal, appears to contradict some earlier studies that suggested HRT protects against cognitive decline if treatments are started near the onset of menopause.

But it was complicated by the fact that scientists could not distinguish the reasons HRT was prescribed in the first place - to treat changes in sleep, mood, memory, and thinking - from the early symptoms of dementia.

I have heard the opposite. That HRT in fact minimises congnitive dysfunction...

The fact that this scary study was based on *synthetic* hormones, instead of bioidentical, is a HUGE factor that needed to be included.

It’s interesting, but the Danish study used the synthetic hormone called progestin. Progesterone is different. It’s made from plants and is the exact makeup of what a woman’s body makes. Progestin is not progesterone.

Damaging to put this out without completing all investigations and having considered the whole evidence. 😠

Synthetic HRT or bio-identical. 🤔 I noticed the reporter never distinguished which one.

This study used predominantly oral oestrogen and progestin, both of which are not currently rec.

The opposite is true in my studies. It decreases risk. Well we can make this easy. Look at all the women currently with dementia and see how many took HRT. If a disproportionate number took it then I’ll buy it increases dementia

Watched 3 videos before this one that said HRT helps to NOT develop dementia. It sure would be nice if everyone was on the same page 🙄

I am in perimenopause, 51 years old, and a nurse. I suffered from fibroids which was hell and now my perimenopause symptoms are so bad that some days I can barely walk, brain fog, weight gain out of control. If I sit I can barely get up. I hurt worse the more I work out. Exhausted. No I refuse to live the rest of my life like this. I started taking herbal HRT and almost everyday is better. Matter of fact I am positive that dealing with no sleep, pain that hurts so bad I can not lay down at night, and all the other bs that wreaks havoc on my system will drive me crazy way before fixing this mess and living my life. I support the use of HRT and I know for a fact that a lot of this type of information is fear mongering from the medical community. Additionally women's health is mishandled far to often.I say do your own research, weigh risks vs benefits, and decide from there.

Great, another reason to make me fear trying HRT, but I truly feel like I’m dying some days, with these menopause symptoms 😩

A "new study" can be manipulation of statistics. Shame on Sky for bringing hysterical content. As if menopause doesn't distress enough!

This is untrue. Baloney. What kind of estrogen?

This is not true. It's quite the opposite.

Makes sense, we r not meant to take drugs to stop a process that’s meant to happen. The body will rebel and do the opposite

Not good!!! Make up your minds. Why frighten pure women?
This is like bacon...one year fine, next year it's bad. We have pretty much decided to eat bacon if we want to!
