To add a bit more context, Nikita Khrushchev had transferred control of Crimea to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic from the Russian one, which is why Ukraine left with Crimea.

Thats not all. Catherine also sent a lot of russian migrants to the South of Ukraine in the hopes of integrating the newly conquered region into Russia.

The region was renamed as "Nova Rossiya" or "New Russia" and many of the modern russians living there are descedants of those migrants. Many cities were also created for that goal (Kherson, Melitopol, Mariupol and Sevastopol)
