Signs of High Cortisol. Why Cortisol is Important?

Cortisol is that steroid hormone that is produced by your 2 adrenal glands, which sit on top of each kidney. When you are stressed, cortisol is released into your bloodstream. Having the right cortisol balance is essential for your health and producing too much or too little cortisol can cause health problems.

Why Cortisol is High in the Morning?

Everyone has high cortisol from time to time and levels vary throughout the day. It’s part of your body’s natural response to stress.

How Does Cortisol Affect The Body?

It's the adrenal glands that make the hormone but the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis that controls how much your body releases. When it does get released, most of the cells in your body have cortisol receptors, to take in the cortisol and do important biological tasks.

Normal Cortisol Levels. What Cortisol Level is Too High?

Really the only way to validate if your cortisol levels are in fact higher than normal, is to get them checked, either with blood, urine or saliva. Yes, its normal that it peaks in the early morning and declines throughout the day, reaching its lowest level around midnight.

Sometimes if you work a night shift and sleep at different times of the day, this can change too, but the normal levels, lets say from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. are about 10 to 20 micrograms per deciliter, and around 3 to 10 mcg/dL closer to 4 pm.

Does High Cortisol Cause Weight Gain?

But there are some clues we can use to help us determine if it is indeed high. Weight gain, especially in your face and abdomen. This is known as the moon face. Where the face becomes more round, full or puffy.

Fat depositing over the sides of the skull which adds to the face looking rounder. This is often but not always tied back to Cushings syndrome, which comes with an array of its own symptoms, one hallmark is the Pink or purple stretch marks on the stomach, hips, thighs, breasts and underarms.

Does Cortisol Cause Hirsutism? Does Cortisol Affect Hair?

Excessive hair growth in females, otherwise known as hirsutism. Which affects about 10% of women in the US. Having chronically high cortisol is not the only cause of hirsutism, we know that conditions like PCOS, acromegaly, and sometimes pregnancy can cause this to occur as well.

Buffalo Hump and Cortisol. What Causes Buffalo Hump?

The third symptom of high cortisol is what called the buffalo hump. This may be more of a direct association with cushing's syndrome though, where you get the fat production that often gets deposited in the neck, which is known as lipodystrophy.

Does Cortisol Affect Bones. Cortisol and Osteoporosis.

A fourth symptom of high cortisol is just having weak bones, which can lead to osteoporosis and sometimes fractures. This is because elevated cortisol levels interfere with osteoblast formation and decreases bone building, which then reduces bone density.

Cortisol and Easy Bruising. How Cortisol Affects Skin?

Now this isn't only indicative of high cortisol. Chemotherapy, blood thinners, and aging are also some examples where bruising easily can occur. But the way in which Cortisol causes it, is how it breaks down some of the dermal proteins and how it weakens the small blood vessels. In fact, sometimes the skin may become so weak it develops this shiny, paper-thin quality which allows it to be torn easily too.

How to Lower Cortisol Naturally?

In the meantime, a few tips you can take to help manage cortisol after speaking to your doctor is getting quality sleep, which is in fact treating conditions like sleep apnea or insomnia that affect this, exercising regularly, combating stressful thinking patterns, practicing deep breathing exercises.

PTSD can cause chronically high cortisol due to hypervigilance.

Living at this time, dealing with ppl mentality and behavior, driving, watching and hearing the news, dealing with economy crises… I think it’s weird if someone actually does not have high cortisol.

Living with complex PTSD, I became a caffeine addict for 15-20 years, consuming 3-500 mg steadily throughout the day. Often having a cup between 6-10 pm. This certainly elevated cortisol and reduced sleep quality.

What’s sad is the number of people who are saying their doctors don’t listen to them or they can’t see one.I know what this is like and it’s a real shame.I think just attacking your ailments head on is key through things like diet and exercise and mental health strategies can only help you as you work to get some sort of medical help.Just don’t wait for it to start making changes. If you feel off or like you have this then it can’t hurt.

She has Seriously bad glaucoma and heart issues, was misdiagnosed with BiPolar depression/ anxiety for 30 years. She began treatment last week and we already see some improvement

When I wanted to check up with my doctor about this, they ignored me and I never got a check-up time with them. Sucks to be ignored when you really feel like a check-up could lower your stress.

I really appreciate your content! It is probably one of the best speaking to hypercortisolism. I have battled Cushings Disease for 20 years. I had neurosurgery twice and a radiation for anterior pituitary adnomas. After radiation, I developed panhypopiyuitarism and take eight replacement hormone medication and injections.

It has been a LONG journey!

It might be helpful for your followers to hear the differences between Cushing's Disease and Cushing's Syndrome. As you know, the origin and treatment are very different between the two.

From what I have read in the responses a quite a few individuals do not know what to look for in an endocrinologist, what tests confirm either disease, and the types of treatment.

Keep up the great content!

By the time you get those red marks it's way too high, I was treated by a doctor with steroids, I went from 133 lb to 165 lb I had to find another endocrinologist they wouldn't lower my cortisol because they told me it was in normal range, finally I've lost 20 lb. I had no red stretch marks on my skin at all but I was developing a hump on the back of my neck I was getting moon face and I was 20 lb heavier and my legs were swelling and now I've developed Venus insufficiency. I don't recommend taking steroids for anything.

Jazak Allahu Khayrun doctor. This is very useful Masha Allah. I would’ve liked to have known if ashwagandha and the other supplement are harmful in thyroid disease. Thank you.
