Anyone who missed the recent northern lights will have another opportunity to see a rare celestial event, but stargazers will have to act fast.

The Tsuchinshan-ATLAS comet has reached its closest point to Earth in more than 80,000 years and is so bright that it can be seen with the naked eye.

Comets aren't "fireballs." In fact, they're the opposite, they're rock, gasses, and ice.

You might want to check your notes again PhD student Charmi Bhatt because comet C/2024 S1 (ATLAS) is just around the corner and could be seen to the naked eye around next week. S1 could potentially be as bright or even brighter than A3 if it survives its perihelion journey around the sun. Some models are saying that S1 could brighten up to -5.3 magnitude which is as bright as the planet Venus in the night sky.

You just said it only shows up every 80, 000 years, why'd you say it'll be back in a couple years?

Can anyone explain why it's only lit up and visible about an hour before sunrise and an hour after sunset?

this is something that things in our upper atmosphere do. like space x rockets launched after sunset. or space station going by.

this comet is supposedly 50 million miles away right now, so why not lit up all night long?
