Civil Resistance in 2021 – Talk with Cathy Eastburn & Roger Hallam.

Extinction Rebellion was set up to tell the truth and the truth is that if we allow the carbon economy to get back up and running post covid ,we are locking in the suffering and death of billions of people. This is beyond the imagination but one thing is clear: that at this point, two years after the founding of XR, we have to enter into civil resistance against the government or become complicit in its murderous intent. Knowledge requires action.

In this talk Cathy Eastburn will explore what XR has taught her, how she find strength to take part in ‘high stakes’ actions and how we can support each other in a regenerative way through this journey.

XR co founder Roger Hallam will then outline our responsibilities at this time: to undertake nonviolent direct actions which will result in arrest and imprisonment. This is what happened in the past and this what is demanded of us now.

Very moving points about stepping up, responsibility and inter-generation duties, and stepping up to protect one's young, as well as being one's best self. Good point that it's not only about being sacrificial, and the need to avoid projecting, shooting the messenger, and other kinds of giving up. Also that feeling of connection with others, very inspiring thanks. The life-force is coming through us, sounds perfectly reasonable given that the death force is still in charge of our economies and at least half our politics. Got to think about that them and us stuff. Is there not an enemy? Does our connecting to love really get picked up by this particular world? I hope you are right! I will remember the young activist in Co.Cork Ireland who was imprisoned for graffitiing on the path and walls of office buildings (consequently banned from) because she refused to have any complicity in this money-fueling fantasy world in spite of the dire climate reality.

Embrace your anxiety so it gives your rational mind the energy required to overcome your limitations and the limitations that this dysfunctional death cult of neoliberalism imposes upon civilisation. We each have a part to play and rather than being afraid of our anxieties consider these anxieties as being ones instincts. For to be human is to have a strong need to affirm life, without a rational reality based focus, that affirmation can lead us to inability to adapt to a changing world.

We live within the end stage of neoliberalism and it is a cult that we have to deal with and when reality intrudes most cults tend to exaggerate their ideology becoming bizarre and defensive employing violence as a means to maintain the utopia of their ideology. It’s a pity that this utopia doesn’t extend to everyone and not just to the elite primarily and their enablers secondarily for the burden imposed to maintain it is externalised to the broader base of the population and to the biosphere itself.

Those who are intoxicated by the neoliberal ideology find it difficult to deal with their anxiety so they cannot accept anything even scientific facts themselves which question their ideology with reality preferring a relative lesser of 2 evils that of utopia, a comfort of delusions keeping a control for without that control reality will rush in as there is a vacuum of reality within all cults.

The narcissism that empowers that neoliberal ideology is central to the cult and for anyone to face their narcissism is perhaps one of the most painful anxiety ridden experiences much like negotiating an addiction and a recovery with detoxification. To overcome ones narcissism is a self destructive process but it is a rebirth and birth is a painful process and a second birth is a spiritual birth where we must deliver ourselves and those pains are our own and impossible to share we are each alone in that place and times of rebirth. Do not expect any sympathy.

Anxiety is the energy which helps us find the means to change it is the medium of creativity. For what is in the pipeline we will need a creativity of problem solving and an order of change that runs a risk of reiterating the same central problems of hierarchical management rather than establishing an intellectual and science resourced people’s assembly.

Brothers & Sisters, know this, people been sitting round camp fires hundreds to thousands of years debating some kind of impending doom because of our behaviour, people used to think this planet was flat riding atop an elephant standing on tortoises, people to this day still dispute this planet is round & is really flat, only those who went up there & those that sent them up there know its round, the thing is, if so little is known about what the truth actually is, why the hell we still disputing things like global warming & eating red meat when its obviously not good for the planet & future generations & we getting fat & obese because our bodies don't want crap inside us so stores it elsewhere. When is common sense gonna kick in while plagerism has kept us still talking & not walking the walk. We have to evolve & change is the only thing that keeps us alive. A mother warthog runs when a lion approaches, and frequently the lion will eat her baby/babies...The mother warthog can have more babies, she can't help her babies survive, or reproduce further, if she's in a lions belly...it's risk verses reward..If I haven't seen that exact scenario play out dozens of times, in person, I wouldn't comment on it, but a better analogy is in order..A mother grizzly bear would be a better analogy, and I know that from first hand knowledge also, unfortunately...I do have a theory, or a suspicion, that all of the melting ice in the arctic, causing the land to raise and shift, releasing the pressure that holds magma in check, might cause a volcanic age, cooling the planet, and possibly buying humans a little time..It just seems like the kind of yin and yang of earth systems...Iceland volcanoes, as well as volcanoes associated with and near glaciers, and maybe even affecting tectonic plates..It's a hail mary, a long shot, but it would have the added effect of grounding airlines..But, volcanoes could also make issues worse in the long run for sure and maybe even the short run....I also suspect melting ice cools oceans, as sort of a negative feedback..We need some negative feedbacks to kick in or we are finished...I have another theory that intelligent species that don't evolve past ego, greed and violence, self destruct, having the ability to only destroy one oasis of life..If an intelligent species technologically evolves to the point of becoming interstellar, they could destroy thousands if not millions of planets blessed with life..It's a natural universal fail safe mechanism...Some have labeled the great filter...Although they have only considered the technology, instead of the social shortcomings that lead to the misuse of technology...The odds are stacked against us, all of these tipping points and thresholds are in the rear view mirror..Even if we stopped all of our self destructive behavior right now, this very moment..We would still have to deal with the consequences of our behavior, which would probably lead to the collapse of human civilization and the collapse of life on earth..Every action has an equal and opposite reaction..Trillions of self destructive actions have apocalyptic reactions....

The lack of a real political strategy or E.R. is so depressing. Feeling good about what you are doing, in fighting the good fight, with out confronting the root cause of ecological crisis is deppresing. Our society is built on destroying the natural world and its people. To act without a political programe is futile, and merely a form of meaningless activity and in truth a form of entertainment, self or otherwise. Please try and take politics seriously, it effects us all.
