In this special Hurricane Helene vlog, chief meteorologist Brad Panovich has the latest forecast for the storm. Helene is expected to become a major hurricane before making landfall along Florida's Gulf Coast. Helene's latest cone forecast shows significant impacts possible from Panama City to the Big Bend with life-threatening storm surge possible on the Gulf Coast.

At landfall, the storm is expected to be a major hurricane with winds over 115 mph.

A "major hurricane" is defined by the National Hurricane Center as any storm Category 3 or higher. That means the storm would have at least sustained winds of 111 mph, according to the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale.

I was visiting the Asheville area with my family last week. We were staying in a mountain cabin in Old Fort, NC. It was this channel (along with another) that helped me decide to cut our trip short and leave Thursday afternoon, braving the rainy mountain road conditions and driving back home to Georgia. If it weren't for this forecast, we would'nt have left early. Who knows how my family would have fared had we stayed? Thank you!!

Falling trees along culverted roadways & next to homes can be deadly in the south. Due to heavily rain-saturated ground combined with shallow root systems & strong wind gusts. Try not to go out driving if possible. If your house is surrounded by large trees, maybe leave now.

Last week in central nc we had 5 days of rain m -f. This week it has been raining since Monday. We only had a break over the weekend. Our rivers will probably flood between greensboro and burlington. 😊
