Hi Mike. It is not northern Europe's steepest train. It is northern Europe's steepest, loco hauled, adhesion worked train. The Flåm line is 1 in 18 (or 55%). The Snaefell Mountain Railway on the Isle of Man, is also adhesion worked, and it is steeper at 1 in 12 (but not it is not loco hauled). The Snowdon Mountain Railways is much steeper at 1 in 5, and is loco hauled, but it is not adhesion worked, it is rack and pinion. And yes, Vic has done all three ! The airport train, the flytog, is a BM71 unit. Your train on the Bergensbanen was hauled by a El 18 loco and is formed of B7 coaches. Sadly you chose the early start from Oslo. Far better to catch the 10.20 off Bergen, and enjoy a leisurely breakfast; and this train gets into Myrdal (the junction station for the line to Flåm), ahead of the train from Oslo, so you get a far better choice of window seats. The most scenic part of the Bergensbanen is the bit between Bergen and Myrdal. Three good reasons for doing it from Bergen not Oslo. The Flåm train has six independent braking systems (rheostatic, regenerative, electro-pneumatic, air, vacuum, and screw), each one, capable of stopping the train on the gradient. The line is so steep, normally trains uphill, only stop once, at the halfway passing loop, as the gradient is too steep to do a hill-start on, without burning the tractions motors out. Your train was top and tailed by a pair of El 18 locos, and the lovely coaches with windows that open, are the B3 design. Nice you visited the railway museum. The electric loco was an El 9. The smaller loco was a small tractor (Skd 220 ?). Safe travels, Mike. Regards from London, England.

I’ve commented on this channel a few times before, but seriously - you are by far my favourite YouTuber. I’ve been through a harrowing time lately and these videos have quite genuinely helped me when I’ve needed something to help me stay calm. Can’t even articulate what it is in particular, but they’re so relaxing yet keep me interested; a welcome distraction at 2 am when I can’t sleep! Thanks bud!!

This is the train trip I thought last week's installment was going to be as it is also so scenic. The route is often called "Norway in a Nutshell." I never heard of a zipline there, but of course you two would find one; that must have felt incredible. I've taken this trip and continued from Flam to Bergen by boat, another option.

Very nice! About twenty years ago, I also took the train from Oslo to Myrdal, and the Flåmsbanen, but rather than taking the train back up, I took a ferry from Flåm to Bergen, which was absolutely stunning, ferrying a few hours through the fjords and along the coast. It's quite some time ago, but that was one of the best travel experiences!

By the way the North wales coastline rail is really pretty. Plus they have the longest train station name in Anglesey. Not sure if they are going to the station ATM post covid. But might be worth a look 👀

You and your sis are very photogenic together and I love the familial wild hair at 3:46. The "brown cheese" is Gjetost is made from slow cooked milk. It's delicious and tastes reminiscent of caramel. Delicious on apples. I hope you and your sister make more vids together, actually I love that you include all of your family members from time to time. Two thumbs up!

Hi Mike (and Jess)! Just catching up with a backlog of YouTube and other techy stuff after a busy couple of weeks (70th birthday and other things). WOW! I've seen a number of videos and written articles on the Flam railway and wish I had time and could afford to go there. You have excelled in this presentation. I had no idea that the zip line, intermediate coffee shop and bicycle hire option was available and the goats...well... at least those on the bike path gave you a wide berth to pass safely (wouldn't have wanted to launch and cartwheel over that fence).
You and Jess are indeed blessed to be able to travel and do adventurous things and be able to share your experiences with the rest of us. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Now I must watch this week's offering on the Arctic Train.
Cheers from Michael downunder in Melbourne.

Dude, your videos have really lit the train travel fire for me. It's the immersive experience of car travel without the cursing and homicidal rage of driving.

Another great video! My son spent 2 years in Norway and has wanted to take me there. . . this may have been the remaining motivation I need! One bit of trivia to note, the AIDAnova ship, that was in port, is significant as it is the closest thing on the planet to an 'eco friendly' cruise ship. It is the first cruise ship able to completely run on natural gas! Pretty cool.

2 years ago when we were on holiday with our motorhome, we stopped in Flåm and took the Flåmbahn up and down. It was very nice to see and interesting to hear the story of how it came to be.
