How to set up a hand plane. we will be looking at how to set up a smoothing plane, Scrub Plane, Joiner plane, Jack plane, and even a wooden plane. come with your questions and we will have a fun time live.

00:00:00 James Wright: What are we going to do today?
08:00 Alan Smith: JAMES when are you going to make Sarah a Secretary Desk? Huh? Can’t hear ya!!!
25:00 Aubreykun: When would you choose to use an extremely tight mouth single iron vs an extremely fine set double iron plane for smoothing?
27:00 Tiller Tomažin: I asked on Facebook about how often to sharpen. I'm also interested in the precise functionality of (duplex) Rabbet Plane, vs. Plough Plane, vs. Combination Plane.
36:00 Steve Combs: Why don't low angle planes have a chip breaker? Wouldn't that improve them?
44:00 clockman45: when I put a chip breaker together it bent the plane blade, why?
45:00 Jared a. Sohn: Will you still use the homemade lathe, once the new lathe is finished?
47:00 Matthew Dobbins: Anything special for setting up bullnose/shoulder planes or stankey no. 98 and 99s?
50:00 Sober living with Brian Franklin: I have a number 4 as a smoother, should I get a number 3, is that better?
52:00 Blue Kestral: I recently bought a molding plane and no matter how hard I wedge it the wedge pops out. What am I doing wrong?
54:00 Spencer Goddard: Could you describe how your auger bit holder is put together? I just got some from an antique store and was thinking of making one like it.
56:00 Cody Bryant: James when joint income board and the grain changes on you in the middle of the board what is a good way to help deal with the tear out?
57:00 Matthew Caird: Do you believe in putting your planes down on their sides or on there soles when putting them down? whatever your answer why do you think that?
01:00 Aubreykun: do the large plane-like surforms or autobody files compare to a scrub plane or no?
02:00 Cody Bryant: Why, when I'm planing, are my shaving rolling up and not shooting straight up out of the plane
03:00 Alan Isaac: James, do you recommend using paste wax on the sole?
04:00 Cody Bryant: james is that hock iron o1 or A2 steel?
06:00 billffromnh: How often do you check the sole for flatness? Or does it depend upon their use?

True sharp is an evolving thing, a bit like gold at the end of a rainbow 🌈 you get closer but never find it

I recently put a pmv11 in my no. 7 jointer, I had to file the mouth a little because the iron could barely escape the mouth. I ended up having about 1/32 or less gap left once the iron is proud. Sometimes the gap is even less than that. I was tempted to go back and widen a little more because the mouth can get a little packed while working, and it's not shavings catching on the chip breaker (Stanley chip breaker). But from what you have shown, I shouldn't widen the mouth more than what it is?!?

Could the auger bit box have been in three parts (back mid & front) with the different auger holes being routed or profile planed out in a half circle & then glued together so the two half circles make a tube (with the mid-piece being routed on both sides"?

Me and my dad both share 3 no.4 planes, two of them I own and one is my dad's, we have all of them set up differently, one schrub, one normal and one absurdly fine smoothing plane

I have often wondered about making an auger box like that. I love that design. All Grandpa's augers are sharp and complete except the 12. 3/4? Since he has doubles of nearly all the other sizes, I'm guessing he had two sets and broke both of the 12's. To drill 3/4, he had an adjustable auger. I watched your video on sharpening auger bits and set about to do the same. I discovered Grandpa left them all clean and sharp when he put them away. I found them resting in a tray in his tool box. There are also regular drill bits that appear as though they fit the Brace. Did they use those?

Sharp, perfectly set up (super fine), and produces only a little dust clog = biG FaIL...

Next time that happens I'll try skewing the plane a lot to see If the fibers clear sort of sideways. If that doesn't help I really like your "file the mouth back at an angle" advice, thanks.

I hear the old wive's tale of the wave riding plane. I have YET to see it proven. It sounds, to me, like a guy needed an excuse to buy (make) more tools and he cobbled up that idea to horn-swaggle his wife into letting him have a new toy.SOooo, a challenge! Take a good #4 and a #7, Raggedly cut (both with choppy cuts and long wave cuts) several boards. Edge plane ( will allow feeler gages and visible light test) Plane one with the #7 and one with the #4 the inspect the edge with careful scrutiny. IF you find more than .001" variation in undulation with the #4 I will shut up and back your tool choice.
