Old norse saying "there is no such as bad weather only bad clothing"
I always say that "surest sign of maturity is when being warm is more important than looking cool"

I live in a van, with a diesel heater. I got dangerously close to running out if diesel once. That freaked me out when the temps get in the teens. I managed to make it on the last day by cooking a pot roast with a propane oven.

Nate, thanks for enduring real world deadly temperatures to get this knowledge out to those who have never considered the dangers and its symptoms and what is needed to survive them. Well done and we are grateful for you taking the time to do so.👍👍

I know what cornea freezing is like. I had that happen to me about 5 years ago. I stepped out of my truck into a blast of -31F (-35C) wind and I ran across a small parking lot and as I walked back I had this strange feeling in my eyes as if my eyelids wouldn't close. I made it back to my truck and it took a few hours for both eyes to start watering uncontrollably and it got progressively worse but then came the pain. An excruciating pain in both eyes to the point I had to park my truck and call a taxi to take me to the closest hospital emergency room. The doctor on duty had no idea what was happening to my eyes and he referred me to an eye specialist at a clinic close by literally a few buildings down the street from the hospital. He applied a few drops of some kind of pain killer over my eyes and the pain was gone but it took my eyes 2 days to recover from the discomfort. I have never had that happen to me since. I now wear safety glasses whenever i exit my truck on really cold and windy days. Lesson learned!

I live in interior Alaska and just had a power outage after a storm. Wood stove and lots of firewood is a must along with a small fortune in cold weather gear.

I can attest to how life threatening it can be. Many years ago I was actually stranded in Canada in minus 50 degree weather. Had a boots-on-the-ground crash course in winter survival thanks to the locals. Needless to say, I've never been back to Canada during the winter. I also think it eliminated my desire to move to Alaska that I had fostered for years.

I use to work in Barrow Alaska on the Dew Line
-60 and blowing 90 off the ice caps.
That's cold. We never had clothes called level 3 gear.
We just had cold weather gear and bunny boots.
We wore face coverings to pre heat the air before we breathed it in.
Glad to see you wearing mittens and not gloves.
Fur around the hood was to pre heat the air also before you would breath it.
Where are your sunglasses?
You will get snow blindness without them.
Goodluck

I’ve been collecting old fur coats from estate sales and garage sales for about two dollars apiece. The ones that are in good condition I’m leaving alone to wear for my children and myself, but the ones that are coming apart we have been learning how to sew them into large fur blankets

How do I deal with the cold?
First off I have 8 chords of wood cut and stacked and a wood burning stove.
Second as you pointed out in severe weather you don't go out unless you have to and you do it at mid day so it's as warm as it will be.
Third layers of clothes and this can't be stressed enough.
In bad weather work in twos and keep an eye on each other.
Lastly, NEVER take a risk you don't have to take

Thanks for this, raised here on the plains, packed newspapers through one of the coldest snaps recorded in 1969. Much better clothing now than then, especially boots. One comment to add, wolf (coyote fur) trim is selected because it does not frost up like others, reason military spec'd it.

Nate you are 100% correct on this. I am a world traveller and in my experience it is the older generations that know how to truly survive! It is easy to see things from a modern perspective? To see ants carrying their eggs up a tree in South East Asia was the precursor to a full on rainstorm!
I would say that if you want to know How to survive then look beyond 50 years in the past.
As profit is a more modern concept.

Have done multiple Ultra Marathons in winter. The one I would do was a 100k called the frozen otter. It was - 40° F the last time I did it. With 18 lbs of gear on my back. This race takes place in Wisconsin Kettle Moraine forest hill country. The race is unsupported and that year had hip deep snow at low points. The race states for the love of misery. I do better in cold then heat. I will take sub zero any day over triple digits. Men of the north aren't born we are chiseled out of ice and stone.

Coldest weather I’ve ever been in was in Svalbard, with the windchill it was -82 degrees Celsius…it was interesting and a learning experience 😂

I shoveled snow for 2.5 hours in -35 degree weather (Saskatoon) the other day. It felt very warm! 🙂

From central MN. Last January, a young mother of 21 passed out drunk in a snow bank, at -5F. I think that's somewhere around -20C. Lost all of her fingers and toes from severe frostbite. Tough to change a diaper when you have no fingers. Be careful what you do.

I did a 45 day field excercise just after the 77 blizzard at Ft Drum NY with the 10th Mountain in 176" of snow and sub zero temps. I lived in a military hex tent, but waited for any truck to come into camp so I could run out and huddle the engine to get warm. My duty station was MacDill AFB Florida so I really wasn't acclimated to that, but I did learn a tremendous amount about surviving in cold. Fond memories this long after, but it sure was hell at the time.

Happy New Year, CP! Man, I was shivering 🥶 just watching you. Last time I experienced those kinds of temps was back in the ‘80s when I was in North Dakota. Maybe you could make a video, or a video series on prepping vehicles and gear, such as firearms, for extreme cold weather climates. Even better, prepping our bodies for harsh cold climates through diet or exercise. That is if you haven’t done so already. You ‘ve got a pretty substantial library of information. Good stuff. 👍❤
