Purchasing a wood router is only the first step to routing, the next step is choosing bits and there are hundreds to choose from, in this video Colin lays out what are his most used router bits.

Router bits used:
- Roundover Bits
- Ogee Bits
- Flush Trim Bits
- Adjustable Rabbeting Bit
- Straight Bits
- Sprial Down Bits

At last. Somebody explaining the bits and the videos showing them in motion and for each individual look after the cut. Many thanks.
Keep safe and well Colin.

Both of my grandfathers died before I came along. Now I’m a grandpa for eight “perfect” grandchildren. Colin is the “perfect” model for the grandfather I never had. His videos are filled with patience and genuine enthusiasm. They work well for a learner at any age. What a treasure!

"Just buy the bits that you need, when you need them." That's the best piece of advice. Really, you start thinking about all the things you could do and all the equipment you could get, and you just don't know where to start or where to end. Thank you

I know the common advice is to buy router bits as you need them, but Katz-Moses' approach might be better. His advice is to buy a cheap set (~$100 for 30 bits) then replace the bits with high quality ones as needed. That way you don't spend big money on bits you use sparingly and you can keep in the flow of working on a project instead of having to run to the store everytime you need a different bit.

Anyway I like that approach thought I'd share. Love the channel, I've learned so much from here.

Very good presentation. I like Mr. Knecht's narration. The speed is just right, not slow but not too fast.

Great advice. My father was told by his father when my father asked about building up a tool-box. My grandfather said to buy something each week you need to use. My grandfather was a woodworker. I'm 50 just a few days ago. Sage advice.

Thank you so much for this thorough video. I'm brand new to woodworking and am waiting for my first router to come in the mail. I've been watching videos on how to make a tapering jig. They all make multiple passes when making slots but nobody has ever explained why. Now I understand. Thanks!

Superb! You actually demo the various cuts made by different routers - just what I was looking for!

I am new to this and anything I need to learn I check out YouTube for all wood working info and any video by Colin is always the best out there. He is as good as a personal in house teacher. Maybe even better.

On the last bit you showed for drilling holes did your groove eventually create a complete hole or just a deep channel

Awesome video! I think when it comes to bits, it's a good idea to buy a large discount starter set for practice and inspiration. Then replace single bits with a higher quality brand as soon as they show some wear: You use those often enough, so they deserve to be upgraded.

Very useful information shared.. I owned routers for several years and what I love about woodworking is there is always something new to learn. Thank you so much for passing on these gems.

Great advice on “which bits to buy”! I was so tempted to buy a full set...but backed away from the idea cuz I’m just starting out and, quite frankly, didn’t know when I’d ever use most of the bits in the set. I was happy to see the router I’d selected for my first in your video (the smaller one). It provided the best design for micro-adjustments for depth...great for the flush mounted hinges I installed on my bench.

I was surprised to learn that the spiral bit was so fragile and had used it for full cuts in plywood and it passed through like a hot knife through butter. But, you’re the expert and maybe I was putting more stress on the bit than I realize...slow and easy from now on...thanks again!
