I am enjoying the development of Grey, Book, and Zora. I agree that other characters that have been there from the beginning are being relegated to mostly scenery, and that's a shame.

Not sure where this is for Spoiler Territory: I think they're setting Grey up to be the ship's counselor (pun actually unintentional). And I really appreciate it; there's a reoccurring sub theme of the series where dealing with trauma makes you a stronger person is one of my favorite things about Discovery.

I really liked this episode. Pretty much agree with you on everything, but the clunkiness of the bridge suddenly babbling about a bit of their backstory is bothering me more.

I don't get why people keep trying to remake Disco into TNG/Voy/ DS9. Disco is a science vessel whose main character's are the .... SCIENTISTS! So simple. Not the pilots or navigators. And that's mostly cuz Michael's closest relationships have been with Stamets, Tilly, Culber and Saru. Who just so happen to be the best actors on the cast as well.

The best episode of the entire series so far, imo. Interesting new plot hooks, interesting problems, interesting conversations. FINALLY.

Great Barrier --> TOS callback; extragalactic threat
Sonar --> Reference to cetacians
Could we be getting a long overdue explanation for...the ST4 Space Whales? 🤷‍♂️🙂🖖

So few episodes a season make it difficult to know the supporting characters, unfortunately. Appreciating those Harry Kim and Mayweather centered episodes more than before.

I agree with your critique that we don't know the characters well enough to feel that we know them. By season 4, TNG was able to do "Data's Day, " an intimate day-in-the-life that was a major character-developing episode for the entire bridge cast and some supporting characters as well.

A few more episodes a season would definitely help ease character development with a cast of regulars this size.

I would now like to re-enact several scenes, simultaneously, from this week's episode, and maybe the last two or three as well...

SENIOR CHARACTER: We have an emergency! The ship is in immediate danger, and if we don't find a resolution fast, we're all gonna die! Let's get to work, people! Move! Move!

JUNIOR CHARACTER: SC!

SC: Yes, JC, what is it?

JC: When I was a child... our village was raided by... a platoon of rogue sea otters. They were... everywhere. I... was so scared, I... hid in an alcove. I watched those sea otters devour each of my cousins, one by one. There was nothing I could do. And yet... I've always felt... like I should have done more.

SC: You bore witness, JC. You bore witness.

JC: Thank you sir.

SC: No, JC. Thank you. Thank you for sharing your story with me.

[pull back to show everyone running around crazy as sparks pour from the ceiling]

SC: I'm sorry, what were we doing?

This video helped me finally figure out my overall opinion of Discovery. It feels like the people in charge of writing and producing it are trying very hard to do everything right, but they seem very inexperienced. It's like they put a huge budget and great cast in the hands of talented people making their first television series.

Discovery is running into the issue you have when you don’t have a 22 episode season so you can have character centered episodes that visits the whole bridge crew 1-2 times a season. It’s hard to develop backstories and generate a sense of connection. Discovery has insisted on keeping a nice wide group of bridge characters in the center of the attention so they’re having to shoehorn random bits in to teach us about them. Maybe they’ll find a fix in the second half of the season?

That was a nice review. Thank you, Steve! Happy holidays!

As to Discovery, I think a seasoned director like Jonathan Frakes really compensates for some of the show's shortcomings; he does try to stage things to highlight the humanity of the people involved, and it makes it a better episode over all.

Well, it's Christmas time and I've been all by myself, so I got all snoodled up and watched Disco. Now I've seen it, I thought I'd spend a bit of time with my cool uncle Steve 😁

I really liked this episode. I've been loving this season as a whole and Disco is rapidly climbing the ranks of my favourite Trek shows, and you are really good at pointing out all the things it does well... but you *perfectly* nail the show's biggest issues, too.
The little character background exposition scenes this season kind of remind me of Worf's childhood murder speech from Let He Who Is Without Sin, but better handled. It's nice getting bits of attention on the background characters, but I'd like a whole episode about them, giving me a reason to really care, like they did with Barkley, Garak, Shran, etc.

As an aside, I challenge anyone to listen to Annabelle Wallis singing Stormy Weather and not being completely seduced ❤️

It's the Nothing that destroys everything! Maybe they were in Fantasia. I wonder if they have the Childlike Empress a name they'd solve the DMA.

Steve, how neat would it be to work in front of the "holodeck" wall. The actors are able to see more than a green screen. I hear it's an experience that is unforgetable!

For some reason, "Where Silence Has Lease" didn't occur to me as much as "The Counter-Clock Incident" or "Night." But everyone else seems to mention that one. Maybe I didn't make the connection because there was no entity communicating with the crew.

Steve, as an atheist, how do you feel about [minor spoiler] Book deciding to believe that the hallucination of his father is real, if only because it gives him faith that his nephew still exists in some form?

As an agnostic, I've always wondered if some hope for life after death is useful or not in this life. Despite all of the weird sci-fi phenomena, I like seeing Star Trek characters struggle with this as well.

Not so much about this episode, but there sure seems to be some major rank inflation going on. How many Commanders does Discovery have? Poor Adira is stuck as the sole Ensign on the ship until Starfleet Academy sends a graduate to join the crew. Gratuitous Harry Kim reference. What gives?
