Depending on where you live or what kind of house you're in, you may not know all the parts that make up your plumbing system. If this is the case, you may end up calling the wrong company to try to fix something they're not qualified to do, which can cost you money and just be down right annoying to deal with. Today we're going to walk through your entire plumbing and the basics that you need to know about it in order to be a more educated homeowner. Enjoy!

Thanks for watching! I'm Roger Wakefield, LEED AP, The Expert Plumber and welcome to my channel. On this channel I teach Realtors, homeowners, and home buyers how to save money on plumbing by showing them DIY plumbing, how to work with plumbers, and how to protect their plumbing.

I'm currently a newbie in the trade but you seem to have pride and integrity in your work and I love how you have no problem sharing all the knowledge over the years I aspire to be a great plumber just like you sir

Great vid. As a construction instructor I like how you do not belittle those who try to DIY. Sometimes the pros forget that they too started as curious DIY'ers.

8:58 for beginners, replay the next 10 seconds a couple times to get those basic parts down. Thanks for the video, this is the first one I’ve watched that finally taught some plumbing, the first few were just different vids saying how or why to get into the field.

I dont know what I love more. The professionalism, the badass handle bar moustache, or the fact that this channel is literally a god sent for someone who has no idea about how his stuff works. Thank you good sir for your service!

"Just turn off the angle stops." lol... Yeah, I need to install about 10 of those around here. I have to shut the whole place off.

As a water damage technician I'm finding your videos super helpful when attempting to find the "cause of loss" in clients homes.

Good video Mr.Wakefield.When we first bought this house the water company came over to shut off the water at the curb stop because the existing water main was seized and I've had enough experience to know not to mess with seized valves and replace the seized valves as soon as possible. The water company didn't charge anything to shut the water off at the curb stop, it's after I replaced the seixed water main inside the house and I called the water company to come turn the water back on that I was charged $50.00 for the water company to turn the water back on at the curb stop.God bless you and yours Mr.Wakefield.If I had had the copper pipe press tool that I bought a few months ago back then I would have risked changing the main shut off valve inside the house on-the-fly like I had to sometimes do with the licensed contractors and licensed plumbers in NYC that taught me plumbing and I would have saved myself $50.00.The main shut off here in this house is only 1/2" pipe so it would have been easy to do where as in NYC the contractors and plumbers that taught me and I had to change 2" shut off valves on-the-fly.One of the great advantages of copper pipe press tools is that copper pipe can be repaired even when there is water running through the pipe which is something that soldering pipe does not allow.Note!!!: I do not advise/recommend changing shut off valves on-the-fly, it is something that should only be done with help and as a last resort in emergency cases when the water will not shut off completely.

We used to use those garbage saddle valves to install the line for ice makers.
This was a cheap and fast way to do it and appliance dealers loved them.
When I worked for the appliance store, I put the saddle valve AFTER the shut off under the sink.
That at least made fixing the damage easier...
.
I didn't know these things were a bad idea when I was putting them in, but I was smart enough to put them in so it was cheap to fix when the saddle leaked.

Great intro video! I learned about you via your podcast with Coffeezilla, and I’ve subscribed to you with the idea of picking up some basic plumbing skills before I buy my first house in a year or two.

Love your vids. They're inspiring, educational, and entertaining. You helped me make the decision to pursue plumbing, and I'm starting as a Plumber's helper next week.

Hi Roger - I've been subscribed to you for a while because your memes and reaction videos and passion for your work heal my soul <3 But this week I started a new job at the front desk for a local and very successful plumbing and HVAC contractor, and I want to build a basic understanding of plumbing and HVAC to better help our clients and also to communicate better with the field service team. I searched for basic plumbing videos, and when I saw your name I just banged my head on the desk. Excited to be a student now and not just a spectator. <3
