Obedience implies compliance with the direction or command given by the handler. For a dog to be considered obedient rather than simply trained in obedience, it must respond reliably each time its handler gives a command.

How obedient any dog will be is informed most by their socialization process during their first months and years of life. However, there are some dog breeds which are naturally more inclined to be obedient and, therefore, more easily trainable than others.

No breed is impossible to obedience train, but novice owners might find training some breeds quite difficult. The capacity to learn basic obedience—and even complicated behavior—is inherent in all dogs. Some breeds may require more patience or creativity in training than others. Individual dogs that exhibit fearful or anxious behaviors should also be handled with greater care, and especially not trained using harsh corrective methods, as this training can be psychologically harmful to the dog and result in further behavioral issues.

Shelties are a great fit for this list. I would add that they are incredibly good with small children and puppies. When I got my Shih Tzus, my Sheltie immediately groomed and taught them. He's also brilliant with babies. As to trainability, my Sheltie knows dozens of tricks, and he learns them in two to four repetitions. It's pretty amazing☺☺

We had a Rough Collie/Keeshond cross for 13 1/2 yrs. Buddy was an excellent dog. Very smart. I taught him to wait at the kitchen doorway when we had family dinners during the holidays, not to go past the public sidewalk (stay in our yard) and to wait for my husband to return across the street when he went to talk to a neighbor. Now we have downsized as we’re retired. About three years ago we adopted a senior Papillon/Chihuahua (looks like a Papillon). Reddy is very good, except for recall. Considering he had no training when we got him he’s learned a lot.

I used to have a Golden.
He was very obedient.
Once matured and trained I never even brought a leash with me when we went out.
Not even when we lived in the city centre.

When going in to places where he could not come, like department stores etc, I told him to sit and wait.
When I came out I told him to come and we could go home.
If I forgot to tell him to come he would still stay in place.
Being sometimes a big absent minded I must confess that this actually happened a couple of times.
When I remembered I then had to go back to where I left him and tell him to come.

Poodles and poodle cross breeds are brilliant. I have a toy poodle cross Maltese. Very happy and docile. Very gentle and very smart.🐾🐾🐩☺️

Thank you Rocadoog :) Border Terrier did surprise me! My favourite has to be border collies, their temperament and will to connect with humans really attract me but I don’t think I can match up with their energy and make them happy :/ I guess smart plus low energy do not come hand in hand :)

I'm looking at getting an obedient dog breed in the next 9 months, mainly a family dog that will bond to me. I have always loved the Border Collie, Golden Retriever, Australian Shepherd, Labrador Retriever and German Shepherd. I'm 59, I work 8 hours daily, I'd be able to give them at least 1.5 to 2 hours of exercise, training, buddy time each day. I'm also big in camping, fishing, hiking, walking and spending time outside. Any suggestions on the best dog breed that would suit my lifestyle?, I've been told that if I had 1.5 to 2 hours daily it would be great for Border Collie.

Don't know if I agree with your first slot, every Doberman I've met has been shit heads. They are friendly if not trained to guard. But they are so hyper and intense, Especially if theynarent neutered.

Give me a break! The collie should be on this list! I am a vet and live with 6 collies. I would take them over the other herding breeds on this list. Hands down.
