The thing is with teaching skydiving, if your student gets it wrong, there are rarely any complaints.

I would never go skydive, a broken rubber brought me into this world, a broken rubber isn't taking me out

An update on this case: The instructor saved the students life as seen in this video. Unfortunately since he deployed really high up in the air: It soon took him 41 years though to reach the ground so he ended up dying of old age before he reached the ground anyway.

For those that are unaware, as an AFFI on a category A jump you are required to have at least one instructor holding the student at all times. In the event the exit goes not as planned the priorities are for one instructor to release the student if the other instructor has more control/more experience.

As you can see the outside instructor was upside down upon exit and released probably because the other guy was still belly to earth. For whatever reason the second instructor also released. The first instructor realizes this and sees the student beginning to rotate like a helicopter and moves to intercept. Upon docking with the student again he obviously doesn't have the best grip, but what starts happening is the student is unevenly flailing his legs and dearching causing rotation and instability. He even slingshots the instructor over him. At which the student has forgotten everything and is just reaching for the pilot chute and flailing his legs.

I can guarantee you that if the instructor hadn't of at least got a hand on that guy he would have been spinning so fast on his back they probably couldn't have stopped it. They are obviously still high up and instructor one realizes he had time to fix the student if he could get the rotation to stop. At which point the student deploys on his back and gets a bridle around the neck. It's hard to tell, but it looked like he flipped the student as he deployed which makes sense about the bridle around the neck. Either way he clears it from the neck and that's it.

I don't see much fault here other than unfortunate timing of the student release by both instructors. Every AFFI has had a jump they aren't proud of. Most of us are lucky enough to learn from it over beers at the end of the day with the student.

Thick thighs and blue skies people!

I went skydiving once. I was calm and collected. As soon as you jump, that feeling of having something under you is gone and adrenaline starts pumping no matter how calm. I could literally feel my heart throbbing. My instructor’s main parachute opened but one of the handles didn’t come down to glide around with and I didn’t know until he yelled “FUCK”. I looked up and he was trying to pull the handle with all his force. I almost reached up there and pulled with him out of survival mode. It felt like we were just turning left, the whole time but according to the people watching on the ground, we were going full 360’s in every direction. He calmly said “hold oooon” like as if this happens all the time and he’s annoyed by it. I look straight and he tugs on another handle, and suddenly we are free falling again. That feeling of jumping off the plane, I felt that twice in one go. The only difference was that when we jumped off the plane, it seemed like we had loads of time. The second time, the ground was getting bigger and more detailed. It was our last chance. He pulled the second parachute and it opened successfully and glided around a little bit. All this felt like it happened in about 2 minutes but really was like 15-20 seconds. It felt like your life was about to end but you were to occupied to recognize it. There was no time to think, just do.

Thanks to guy for being super composed and professional.

I’ve watched this several times and I’m convinced that the chute is what saved the student.

It’s amazing how calm instructors are because they’ve jumped so many times.

What is wrong with all these small aircraft, everybody seems to want to jump out of what looks like a perfectly serviceable machine to me.

I triple check if I turned the stove off... I don't think I could even fathom the anxiety I would go through to open a chute lol. You guys are brave souls 💪
