For me when I was in the UK military the sentence we didn't want to hear was "so any volunteers, " and they say it with such a smirk on their face

That's a negative with the missing NODs. During one FTX, our SCO's driver lost his NODs. They kept the entire battalion out in the field searching for them for 48 hrs. We didn't even bother with checking the gear.

Worst Sentence in the Army back in 1999 was Mandatory Fun Run w/ Weps. As the Unit Armorer I hated that, with 1 hr before last formation.

Worst we could hear was "Oh, I see the company is bored" in basic, when we allowed ourself to not look busy. Digging holes, running around with or without gas masks. After some time we developed "my spider senses are tingling" and knew an officer was coming, so we were all "busy".
