Camp Humphreys is located about 40 miles south of Seoul, in South Korea. It's the largest overseas US military base in the world. Despite being only 60 miles from the Demilitarized Zone that separates North Korea from South Korea, soldiers and their families live relatively normal lives, with schools, a shopping mall, doctors' offices, and even American fast-food chains all on base. Following is the text of the video.

Camp Humphreys is like a small American city. It's the largest US military base overseas. The camp is located in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. It's 40 miles south of Seoul and 60 miles from the North Korean border.

Camp Humphreys is an $11 billion complex. The camp has a $64 million shopping center. It looks like a regular mall with 60 different stores. You can also find a bunch of American food chains. The base has a school, golf course, and even a veterinarian.

For the most part, life goes on as usual, but it's a training facility for soldiers. They run drills across the camp to prepare for combat. Right now, about 25,000 people live there, but that number could rise to 42,000 by 2020.

"Closest US Military Base to North Korea"

USAF Osan, USAG Yongsan, USAG Casey: *are we a joke to you?*

Get your facts right. There are several military installations far closer to DMZ.

I literally saw my old barracks room window in this video. Dude I miss Korea so much. Very fun interesting place to live.

This title is misleading haha. There are plenty of other bases a lot closer to NK near the DMZ. Probably just not showing it because it shows how crapy the other soldiers on the front lines have to deal with.

I had spent four tours in ROK 1950 with the 23d Regt 50-51, 5th RCT, 52-53, 7th Div 56-58, and 1st Cav 59-60.

I was at camp Casey for 15 months with a field artillery unit. Casey is way closer to the dmz. Anyone ever do the Manchu mile before? I've done it. And also have done WLC at camp Jackson. Anyone remember those two things to do while stationed there?

Camp Humphreys is a very nice place. I enjoyed staying there for 5 days.

Humphreys is the new 8th Army HQ - "The headquarters of the Eighth Army is Yongsan Garrison, but it is scheduled to move southward to Camp Humphreys by 2019. In April 2017 the Eighth Army headquarters began its move from Yongsan to Camp Humphreys and held a ceremony to relocate a statue of General Walton Walker." I was stationed at the now closed Camp Edwards (East) - which was about 30 klicks or less from Freedom Bridge on MSR 1 (if memory serves); and the DMZ. Camp Liberty Bell, Howze, Greaves, Edwards (West), Garry Owens, Giant and Stanton - all closed in about 2004.

Served here in 1993. It's definitely not the closest to North Korea.

I was stationed at Camp Greaves 95-96' That's INSIDE the DMZ.

I was there in 1990 and I promise you, it looked nothing like that. That is a paradise compared to the way it was.

USAG Humphreys is not the closest US military base to the DMZ, that would be Camp Casey at 13 miles from the DMZ

Um what about Yungsung-gu and not to mention it is basically in seoul+Osan is a military airbase one hour away so this title is mis leading

Camp Casey is closer. I stationed there and always had to be vigilant if an attack occurred. Yes it is misleading. It's because Camp Humphreys is extravagant.

The title in this video has an error. Camp Casey is only 13 miles from the DMZ and there are still American troops there, so it's much closer to the "Z" as we called it than Camp Humphreys. I served at Casey and Humphreys in the 70s.

Definitely doesn't look the same as when I was there in '82.

I've been there. It's not the closest to the north by a long shot. It looks like an expensive resort.
