The 1989 Romanian Revolution was the first large-scale regime change event that was broadcasted live on television as it happened. That's how even today hundreds of millions of people around the world who've never been to Romania recognize the footage of Ceaușescu leaving the Central Comittee building in a helicopter or the footage from the execution of the dictatorial couple.

Hundreds if not thousands of professional documentaries were made about the Romanian revolution in dozens of languages.

But how did it start? And why? And what are the details rarely (if ever) discussed in public? And what lessons can be drawn for present times?

To learn that we travelled to Timișoara, the city in western Romania where it all started - to talk to Marius Mioc, one of the recognized documentarians of the Revolution, author of multiple books about the Revolution and early participant.
