I could theoretically say that I did not live in those times. So, as an outside observer, I hope I don't insult my fellow Romanians.
Ceausescu was a product of his time and conditions. An uneducated man, like most Romanians during those times but who grasped powers and fame when given the opportunity just like any socialist leader, who wanted to improve his country's conditions of living.
He made like 100 decisions out of which maybe 30 were the right ones.
A few good things that I can say he did was put Romania on the international map even if it wasn't graceful or respectful.
He Jumpstart the journey from an agrarian society to an industrialized one.
And he is still spoken of as the president/leader who built the most roads and railways in our short history.
But the same can be said about any communist leader during those times.

Truly there is nothing remarkable about this man. He was just in the right place at the right time.

One of many gripes about him, besides the fact that he became a dictator and imprisoned and tortured anyone who was against his worldview, is that the world changed very much in those years and he was an old relic of a past age.
Not long before his downfall, he actually met with other communist leaders, younger than him, who all knew that a huge wave of change was going to sweep the world and change everything. He was the only one in the room who blatantly refused to accept that he was a man out of time and that he would have to give up power and become a regular old man.
And he is mainly the reason why Romania is the only country in Europe that had a violent revolution instead of a peaceful transition.
It was a harsh lesson that nothing is eternal and you have to be aware of the reality.

For all his fear that Romanians would take their revenge on him and his family, Romanians didn't care about revenge. They only wanted freedom and changes. His son and family continued to live in relative peace, and Romanians didn't judge him for his family's actions.
So, his fear or being judged and pelted by his own people might have been for nothing, it might have even been the cause of his crippling fear to give up his power.

Anyway, that is just a thought. Not a fan of the guy, I am just saying : there was truly nothing remarkable about this man.

Thank you so much for this amazing work you've done for showing the reality of the Comunist Era in Romania led by Ceaușescu. Many still cry for those years... forgetting how it truly was...the most important is that people must choose how to live their lives and be able to execute themselves their plans. That's a free society. Unfortunately we Romania we are not yet there... because the rule of the oppression affected many people who even educated their children with fear of having trust in themselves... it's a disease in the mentality that haven't found cure yet, on which many take advantage of...I hope some sort of inner power will rise in time and the trust in self will reign Romanian People. Ceaușescu's regim existed also because so many agreed with it...imagine that they didn't really died with his death...

What about the defection of Ion Pacepa and his memoir Red Horizons. The former securitate head's memoir on Radio Free Europe led directly to the 1989 Timishara demonstrations that triggered the revolution. My father in law was a colonel in the Romanian Army and was involved in Bucharest.

He and his entourage were known from stealing everything they could when at foregin trips.
Queen Elizabeth had the valuebles taken out of their quest rooms at the Palace after being warned by the French that they had gone as far as stealing their golden faucets in the French Palace, taking everything they could.

From what I gathered he did a lot of damage to the country in many ways to build the Palace of the Parliament to fulfil his ego.

As mentioned, he took important steps away from the USSR .
Namely, oposing the Invasion of Prague in 1968.

At the very end, too much power, disfunctional economic ideas and corruption sunk the regime.
His execution was sad and pathetic -- apparently, he was the Victim of a Coup implemented by the Armed Forces.
Obviously inspired by the downfall of the Warsaw Pact Regimes.

John 3:16-21

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

I don’t know how to examine this. I am a forgiving person if they have the capability to change. I have patience but of course patience you wouldn’t have in that split second decision where it matters. As my own judgement I would have sentenced them to prison. The military in Romania must have been too far gone under Nicolae. That influence or manipulation could of been what drove the violent ending. So is it just tit for tat?

Shame you haven’t spent more time mentioning his MANY CRIMES and abuse of not only individuals but also the whole population of Romania. He was also very much involved in international espionage, intellectual theft, supporter of terrorist movements (while pretending to promote peace) and crimes committed on foreign soil.
This man was a monster and deserves his place right there next to the worst dictators of Europe. His wife was even worse than him, ponder on that for a minute. Lucky for us Romanians she never got to rule the country herself. Imagine that if you can. 😱

I remember the day he was toppled.. but it was the conditions of orphanages that really shocked people back then, and probably the main reason why we knew that we needed to help the people in Romania.
I'm certainly glad they were positive about joining us.
