JJ is normally on point but he's incredible short sighted on this one..

*Early 2000's* :
- Illegal defense changed to 3-second rule, some argue this didn't have much effect on offense and maybe they're right but allowing teams to run zone has opened up so much 3pt shooting that I think the effect is profound personally
- Hand checking finally clarified and prohibited
- Time to make it across half-court reduced to 8 seconds from 10 seconds, increasing pace of the game favoring offense forcing more possessions. Some would argue this favored defense but I think the end result has just been more possessions with a negligible effect on back court violations.

*2010* :
- Backcourt rule modified to benefit offensive players, they must have both feet in front-court before defender can force a back-court violation
- Semi-circle for restricted area preventing charges near the hoop (expansion on old rule of 4ft radius)

*2014* :
- Expanded restricted area to include standing on the line.

*2017* :
- "Zaza Pachulia" rule was enacted to make what used to be rough close-outs a flagrant foul. Defenders must now give wide clearance for offensive players to land on jumpshots and can be called for flagrant or technical foul if the offensive player lands where the defender has closed out to. This gives shooters free reign to take what used to be dangerous jumpshots, whether you think it is a useful rule or not (I do) doesn't matter, the effect has been positive for offensive players.

*2018* :
- Shot clock reset to 14 seconds instead of 24 seconds after an offensive rebound that hits the rim. Further increased pace of game favoring high scoring offenses (again some might argue this helps defenses but pace really effects the scoring in a game)

*2022-Now* :
- Transition take fouls will now result in 1 free throw and possession for offensive players even if defending team has a foul to give. There is supposed to be exception for "plays on the ball" but that has been incredibly hard to officiate and most of them result in violations regardless.
- Flopping penalties are now assessed on both offensive and defensive players but effect the defensive side of things more heavily. Taking charges is an artform and there's now a penalty on players resulting in 1 free throw and possessions (a technical but does not count towards ejection)

*Extra* :
- The NBA has also done a litany of "points of emphasis" which more often than not (but not always) has favored offenses and high scoring games, something that has made the league as fast-paced and exciting as it is today
- Defensive fouls are called discriminately with good offensive players seemingly being gifted benefit of the doubt on minimal contact with other players struggling to get calls in those same moments. There is an air of "well if he missed he must have been bumped" that while not technically a rule change has still allowed incredible numbers from a certain set of players who I won't mention.

Carrying the ball halfway around the world just left the chat

Trash take. Not allowing defenders to hand check was more impactful on the way the game's been played than every rule change JJ listed combined.

The only reason those rules were even implemented in the first place is bc players realized the league was trying to increase offense to boost viewership, and they started proactively TRYING to make it look like they got fouled until even the fans started complaining about

Carrying, travels, moving screens (the list goes on)

They did all of that and still let the mofos take 6 steps 😂

The thing I hate about these type of arguements is the fact that you're asking everyone else to point you in the direction of the rule that shows the other sides point. You probably didn't make an effort to look up rules that favor the offense, only rules that favor the defense ?

not only that but the amount of fouls called nowdays… always helps defense

Carrying
If they called the game as they did in Pistol P's day, all carry
DUH !

The gather step and no hand checking ALONE make the game favor the offense 🤷🏿‍♂️

Ref calls usually favor the offense they are only rules if enforced

You can't hardly miss an nba game where someone is travelling. They should just change the rules so that you can take 5 steps after you stop drinbling

This is stupid and ignorant. I can't take JJ seriously. The "pro-defense" rules are being put in place to correct for the refs slowly allowing carrying, travelling, offensive fouls, and moving screens to go uncalled.

I’m sorry but the 3 point shot favors the offense.

Which rules favor the offensive player? how about all of them? literally all other rules. 1# if you let a guy carry and give him an extra step there is NO WAY TO DEFEND IT. You cannot defend it. also we are talking about how the game is called not written rules. The game calls are all favoring offense.

Nah these are rules that always "favored the defense" but they stopped calling them that way for a few years and then finally got it under control.

Carrying, traveling, barreling into defenders and drawing fouls, and landing airspace all favor offensive players.

JJ is not only wrong but he acts smug while being wrong which is ten times worse 😂

ask yourself why they had to help the defense out in the first place...its not rules that help the offense...its exploitations like flopping

The fact that you cant put your hands within 3 ft of lebron when shooting or else its a foul needs to be cleaned up

Traveling, gather step, defensive three seconds, hand check….

It’s still dogshit.
Does anyone actually like seeing games end 132:128?

Every pic set for Steph and Klay since 2015 has been illegal. For some reason they never get called.
