Adding powdered eggshells to garden beds can provide several benefits for plants. They are rich in calcium carbonate, which is an essential nutrient for plants. They also contain other nutrients like magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and organic matter. These nutrients can contribute to the overall fertility of the soil and support plant growth. Eggshells can also help prevent blossom-end rot, a common condition in tomatoes caused by calcium deficiency.

In order for eggshells to provide these benefits, they need to be ground into a fine powder before adding them to the soil. This allows for better decomposition and nutrient release. It may take several months for the eggshells to break down and be absorbed by the plant roots, so it’s recommended to till them into the soil in the fall or very early in Spring.

You can also mix the powder into your compost bin. If you have a worm composter, eggshell powder helps the worms break down organic materials much faster.

Adding vinegar to the shells and letting them sit for about a week will convert the calcium into a plant available form immediately. Adding to soil without that will take about a year for the soil microbes to do the converting.

I like doing this but i like to do a mix of just hand crunched eggshells as well as powdered because then you get both slow and long release calcium

I've been doing this for years. I just let the eggshells dry naturally. Then, when i have alot of shells saved up, I will powder them in my blender, then I add the eggshell powder to my compost bin.

This is great for California gardeners if you’re growing in native soil. Serpentinite is the main bedrock material in California, giving Magnesium rich soils. Too much Magnesium can interfere with a plant ability to uptake calcium, so amending your soil with bioavailability calcium can have huge benefits

I mix it in with chicken food. They have to have a good share of calcium to produce strong shells.

A huge bag of pelletized lime is only a few $$ and it'll save the the time and money associated with saving, cooking, and grinding shells.

Too much calcium increases the oxalates in plants, especially tomatoes. Please do more research before you share this information. I recommend the book Toxic Superfoods.
