Is Japan Safe? Watch This if You're a Woman Moving to or Traveling Japan.

Is Japan really safe? Everyone always asks me about my experiences being a woman in Japan and if it's really ok to keep your door unlocked, walk alone at night, getting on packed trains. As someone who did not think it would happen to me - it did and I want to make sure that anyone who moves to Japan or is thinking of traveling here is safe and know what to do in certain situations. I am not here to scare you. I am simply giving you a heads up on what you might experience here. Not everyone experiences the same thing. As long as you're aware and know your surroundings, you will be ok.

Japan IS safer than most countries and despite my handful of bad experiences I still feel a sense of peace here. These things haven't happened to me for a long time and it's because I learned how to deal with these types of situations.

Enjoy the video and please let me know if you have any questions!

FYI viewers, a police box is called a Koban (交番). They don't all look alike and may not even look like an official building but they will often have Koban written in English letters or the Japanese I showed. If you have internet access you can search for Police on Google Maps and see where all the boxes are. If not you can always ask someone on the street, even if they can't understand you they should understand koban and might even walk you there if you need to go immediately.

I hate when people say it's women's fault to be harrassed that way... Just because you wear a skirt or are a little drunk doesn't mean men are allowed to touch.

As a Japanese woman living in this country for my whole life, I wanna say it loud, "this is so true!!" Yes Japan is safer than many of other countries but it does have the dark side. I've lived in Canada for a year and that opened my mind to be aware of those problems in terms of women's rights. I'm so sorry that such terrible things happened to you and hope it'll never happen to you again. But thank you for sharing your stories and letting international people know that women should be careful in Japan as well!

It really irritates me that situations like this exist. Kelly, I'm a black man, and you'd be surprised how many times people have randomly come up and touch or group me especially when I was in high school and early college. And unfortunately, if I struck them, it would like just 'another violent black person.' I would freeze and try to figure a way out without getting the police called me for assault. To this day, when random people come up and talk to me, it puts me on guard.

Again, really sucks that this happens. Good information in this video!

Although i'm one of Japanese, what you said in this video is all correct that i'm sure.
i think Japan is safer country than other country but in fact, in japan, status of women is still low... especially adults have bigger gap of status between men and women. However I just want you guys to know that teenagers know it's ridiculous so...hopefully in near future, it's going to be better and better.

I’m Japanese man and I’m sorry about your experiences in Japan. Tokyo makes me upset and sick sometimes even though I’m man. Thank you for sharing your story.

SO HERE for the real talk!!! Don't let people invalidate your experiences. That is sexual harassment, and you're allowed to feel uncomfortable about it. Thank you for speaking out about this!

Thank you so much for posting this! Living in Korea, I hear so many youtubers talk about how safe Korea is, and how comfortable they feel here. Unfortunately, not many of them talk about the real dangers that women actually face. I'm so happy that you made this video, because it's a good resource for women (especially young women) coming to Japan about how they can watch out for themselves.

KELLY!!! I am screaming in HAPPINESS, as soon as you said you punched this disgusting human being in the face with your bag I started yelling I am so so sorry all these situations happened to you, and I know that it's so difficult to react in the moment, but the fact that you did that is incredible I'm sure he never expected it. That's how I would have reacted too. Thanks for the video!

Hi I’m a Japanese girl. After hearing your stories I’m so freaked out. How terrifying it is especially for foreign girls. They don’t even imagine it.
It’s just so disappointing but I’m pretty sure such things in Japanese trains happen every day somewhere you don’t know.
Also most of Japanese girls don’t talk about it if they get molested because of their shame and hopelessness for changing.
The most horrible thing is those experiences of Japanese women in train have been kinda commonplace. Many of them just accept it without surprise but of course, with discomfort. I don’t wanna be like that.
I really wish those men were different species from me, us but actually we’re in the same box, Japan, so I’m feeling kind of responsibly for changing all about this issue.
Thank you for sharing. I’m so happy and thankful it seems you haven’t started hating Japan itself just because of some stupid people. Hope you‘ve found many great things and nice people that totally overweigh those sad stories.

I failed to mention that even though these things have happened to me everyone, Japan is a lot less aggressive. There’s not many attacks and mostly just touching and groping. The violence is much much less.

I was coming out of grocery store once and my mom was waiting for me in the car. She said a man had followed me out and as soon as she turned on the car... the man realized my mom saw him and immediately walked the other way. I didn’t even hear him or see him. Now I’m constantly looking around. it’s terrible. Thank you for making this video!

Thank you for posting this and being so honest about your experiences! I grew up in Japan and the amount of times I have been followed by creepy older men is unbelievable. The good thing about Japan is that if you call them out or give them a good glare they (most likely) will get very nervous and walk away.

The phone picture taking still happens especially when it’s noisy in the stations/restaurants/trains and the sound is less audible 😣 The bushes man is legit terrifying! I agree that having a camera helps and also getting your phone out and calling someone (or even pretending to) helps. Especially if you think you’re being followed. This was an amazing video Kelly, thank you for making it ❤️❤️❤️

Thats great to know. Here in Argentina we are experiencing even worst stalking than that. From men yelling perverted stuff to even abuses. So we stood up and defend ourselves.
My advices for women are to make eye contact when someone passes near u in a suspect way. This makes you more aware of what he's doing so no surprises. If you are being followed, yeah talk to someone on the phone, or (like we do here) find another girl and quickly tell her to pretend she knows u. Explain quickly and go to a public place like a store.
And finally, when someone tells me something nasty, i respond. I raise my voice so people around me knows whats going on. Use your voice. And hit them if its necesary to keep him away, like Kelly did.

Be careful and protect each other.
And thank u Kelly for give some advices about it! 💕😊

I have a daughter about your age living alone and working in Tokyo. I'm not able to see her often as I live in Hamamatsu(little too far for the daily visit). She probably has experienced the similar. I call her every few days but, she never answers the phone. She sends me LINE message instead saying "What is it?". I say "Nothing, I'm just checking it in on you" and it is the end of "conversation" each time.

"He took his hand, and he grabbed my breast."

Me: And he's still walking?

"I stood up, took my backpack, and hit him in the face. Really hard."

Me: Atta girl.

I'm a guy so I really can't comment on stuff like this, but on behalf of many female friends I know looking at going to Japan, I know they'll be really grateful, already passed it along. Keep up the good content!

Just an observation: If Japanese men and women are both lonely, but the creeps who stalk and grope are overwhelmingly male, then being lonely isn't the cause. If it was you'd see lots of middle aged and elderly women groping and following men. My take is that what unites the creeps in Japan, who I've been victimized by, as well as friends of mine, is that they feel entitled to treat women and girls as outlet for their frustrations. That's certainly not a phenomenon exclusive to Japan. It's a global epidemic. I've lived on three continents and that shit is the same. But being a high school girl in Japan on public transport or late at night is certainly scary (I experienced this and when young girls ask me about a high school exchange to Japan I'm sure to let them know that they well be an involuntary creep magnet).

I think this video is sooo important so people are made aware (not scared off) and thus not disillusioned about Japan if they ever run into these problems. Thank you Kelly!
