Step inside the pitch meeting that led to 2003’s Hulk movie!

In the early 2000’s, years before the Marvel Cinematic Universe came into existence, superhero movies were starting to pick up steam. Spider-Man starring Tobey Maguire was a massive success, and so it made sense to start tackling some other Marvel properties. However, studios didn’t exactly know what to do with comic book movies just yet. Thus was born Ang Lee’s slow-burn, slow-paced Hulk movie in 2003 with the weirdest editing transitions known to man.

Ang Lee’s hulk definitely raises some questions. Like why does it take so long to see the Hulk? Why is a movie about a giant green monster that smashes things so slow-paced? What’s up with Hulk fighting dogs? Why is everybody surviving these catastrophic attacks from the Hulk? And seriously, what’s with this editing?

To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to Hulk! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

I saw this in theaters, and there was a 4-year-old kid sitting next to me. About a half hour into the movie he said, kind of loudly, "Mom! This isn't Hulk! This isn't Hulk!" That was the most accurate review of the film I ever heard.

"Are people gonna want to see Hulk punch a French Poodle?"

This sounds like something Youtube would recommend 8 years after its been uploaded

I like how even the Producer guy is highly sceptical of this movie.

Man, this pitch meeting makes this movie sound way more trippy and interesting that I remember it being.

As an 8 year old who saw this movie in theaters opening day, I was so confused at not seeing the Hulk onscreen for the first hour that I started thinking my dad and I were in the wrong movie. I remember thinking that I could have sworn that I saw "HULK" in the opening titles, but I actually stopped being so sure.

Don't make him, Ang Lee.

We wouldn't like him when he's Ang Lee.

I remember hearing a random little boy in the theater yell..."When are we going to see the Hulk"

“We hired Aang Lee to direct.”
“Doesn’t he do dramas?”
“Yeah, but he directed that one action film ‘Crouching Tiger.”
“Well okay then, ”

The best critique I've seen of Bana's and Connelly's acting in Hulk was that they behaved as though they'd taken benadryl before shooting every scene.

"I figure Hulk fans will find silent introspection just as fun, if not, more."

Ok, but as a Hulk fan: this is kind of true. My favorite elements of the Hulk as a character are the internal struggles Bruce, Hulk, Joe, and the Professor (when the writer's include him) face. Scenes like when the Professor is waiting in a swamp and realizes that even though he's *supposed to be* a union of the three former alters, he's really a new alter himself. And SO MANY moments of reflection in Immortal HULK, like the one where the Hulk crew are compared to the Fantastic Four. Even some of the early stuff, like Hulk's first encounter with the Glob, or the issue written by Jim Starlin.

There is a real history of soul-searching in the comics. But because of this movie's tonal issues, it fall pretty flat on-screen.
