How To Shift Without The Clutch-Driving Manual (Tutorial)

In this video, I show you how to shift without the clutch. It is actually really easy to do! You basically have to bring the RPM up to the point in which you would regularly shift gears, release the gas pedal, apply pressure on the shift lever, and then press on the gas pedal once the transmission is in the next gear. This is very useful for those days when your left leg is sore or if you want to simply impress your friends. This is a simple lesson on driving manual, and it is possible for beginners to do this; however, I would recommend mastering all of the basic manual driving skills before using this!

Awesome, I can now drive my car with a broken clutch to the mechanic without having to get a tow. Thanks!

*CAUTION ONLY USE WHEN IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION SUCH AS CLUTCH HIDRAULIC LEAK(S) OR PROBLEM WITH CLUTCH CABLE*

I only do this with my 3.7 Dodge at low RPMs in light traffic...It feels like an automatic...quiet and smooth... If you want to race up to 4000+ rpms just use the clutch for performance...:) Down shifting works too. You just have to pull it into neutral, give the throttle a light rev, and pressure the stick to the lower gear...moderate pressure is EMPHASIZED here..:)

You will wear out the synchromesh in the transmission shifting like this. When you put pressure on the shifter to find the next gear, you are grinding away that sacrificial sychromesh that acts like a clutch to get the gear and engine to match. Disconnecting the engine from the transmission using the clutch allows that to happen without the driving force of the engine. I have been shifting without the clutch for over 45 years and would not do it as recommended in this video.

Wow thank you! I just had a world record at breaking my synchros!

Shifting without the clutch is called float shifting.
A lot of skilled tractor trailer drivers float shift their trucks.

depending on the speed you're going, you can predict what RPM is necessary to shift without the clutch and with minimal shock to the transmission.

You don't need that many rpms. The reason there's such a delay in his shifts is because the engine rpm has to come down to match rpm. Optimal rpm to shift at with or without the clutch and even in an automatic is 3000rpm. Start shifting without a clutch there and it'll be quicker and smoother and still getting the best mpg

Guys please don't do this. It can be done but you have to match the revs very well. They way this guy is doing it, he is not matching the revs, he's just leaning on the gear blockers until they match. Following this way of doing it will eventually wear the synchronizer blocking rings and you will have to Rev match and/ or double clutch all the time. Learn how a gearbox works and do it properly if you want to. Not using the clutch during normal driving will extend clutch life. Cons are what I described above.

Very Helpful! Thank You. Right to the point great instructions. Hydraulic hose wouldn't stay in transmission out in the mountains. Cut hydraulic line and been a while since I played around driving without a clutch. Video saved the day!

i remember my dad teaching me this when i first started he was a semi driver and knew all kinds of cool things when it came to driving a manual

Like countless other people I'm leaving a public announcement. This guy is not doing this correctly and even if done correctly you will probably prematurely hurt something unless you keep it under 50. I shift like this occasionally in town but strictly because my clutch is funky (I lied... It's the most satisfying feeling when done correctly). If you are watching this please take caution before shaving years off your transmission just to learn something that will probably kill your car at some point anyways. In old cars and rigs this is normal and tolerances are no doubt a bit bigger in old gear boxes. But ANY transmission will take damage if you don't do this correctly.

And that folks is how you destroy synchros

My neighbor was explaining that he only uses the clutch for taking off. I was thinking this can't be a good but he acted like it wasn't a problem in his old truck.

Oh my Nissan truck I can do it without touching the gas pedal for first and third only. And zero grinding. 9 mph to go into first going downhill and 14 mph for third gear engine was warmed up and idling at 750. Starting at a dead stop in reverse seemed fairly easy by simply hitting the start switch but then you have to turn the motor off to go back into neutral

Rev to 4k to 5k rpm before shifting into 2nd gear, already starts off like a 'great' idea
