It is called muscle memory. When you do these types of movements regularly your muscles remember them, and when you are facing danger, they act unconsciously. Same is with typing without seeing in the keyboard or even riding a bike. Everything in karate is there for a reason.

Its good to see how other Karate-ka interpert the kata bunkai. Gives us all food for thought for when it comes to our turn to intrepret the kata. Good video.

Although karate ka train as a mid to long range fighting system as depicted in this bunkai video, lets not forget karate was developed for a close range self defence system.
Apply these same katas at a short range and these move take on a very different role.

I like your interpretation of the bunkai. There is no wrong bunkai as long as you don't defy the laws of gravity and physics. I have been a karate practitioner for over 42 years and I can say. I like what I see. Thank you for sharing.

2550 - The outside crescent kick is to disarm, block, or strike...would i use it to block with, probably not. seeing innovative bunki helps spur the imagination of others into using their own ideas for a bunkai as there is no 'set' bunkai for any one kata.

OSU! Solid bunkai. For those that are not clear of what a bunkai is, it is an individual's interpretation of the kata. One can add but should not take away from its basic or core form during its application. All katas have a base or "original" bunkai IF taught by their instructors, however it should be the interpritation of the individual itself.

Very nice, It amazes me how some instructors teach Kata and have no idea what it is they are doing, or teaching .
Looks a bit like Asai Sensei's free form, large fearless movements.
Bravo

Funkensteinlives is right.
It's unwise to take the embusen or, even waza, literally when doing kata bunkai, and Iain Abernethy and Vince Morris are great examples of this — effective and realistic, basing their movements on the kata, but not being slavishly dedicated to literal replications of the waza/embusen.

It hurt me to watch this.. I really hate when a partner goes too light and that twirl he did made me want to kick him.

Exactly its not a literal way of fighting like a lot of people think it is, but if you never train in such a way you will never know of the techniques and throws, it also helps you to appreciate the complexity of martial art unless some others like tkd. If you go to any of these hight street cash making clubs you will never do bunkai in this manner, there is more to the arts than fighting.

try teruo chinen and teruo masaji if you are into goju ryu bunkai also kris wilder..see iaian abernethy or vince morris for bunkai showing several stand up grappling counters and arm traps/throws for the heian/pinan kata.while some of the bunkai in this display are good some will get your head handed to you .can't have everything but that is what exploration and developement is about .

@Legolasthefirst1 Well, if the bunkai has to be exactly the same form of kata, I really don't know. If it could be different, I believe you're right in prioritizing the function, which I allign with too. On the other hand, if bunkai needs to match the kata moves, then the sequence appears to be ok to me.

I’m always troubled when demonstrated “Bunkai” take such great liberties with the movements that they often bare little resemblance to the Kata they are trying to explain.

People take kata and bunkai to the letter. I think that bunkai is a range of interpretations. My sensei is very kumite-driven and has a lot of applicable bunkai, whilst HIS sensei is the 2011 Brasilian champion AND the youngest 5th Dan in activity (he's in his early '50s I THINK) and has a lot of seemingly "far fetched" bunkai interpretations that, when shown, are very organic and efficient.

Paulo, if it is a ''presentation'' as you suggest then it is pre-arranged fighting or "Yakusoku Kumite". Bunkai or Bukai oyo is the practical application of the kata and should be seen as part of the fighting/life saving model that springs from true karate. I suggest looking at oneminutebunkai channel or Iain Abernathy's channels at practicalkatabunkai or iainabernathydotcom on YT. "Real life Threatning [sic] self defense moves" ARE for outside the dojo.

These Bunkai look enjoyable to do and are certainly way better than most Japanese Sensei teach. However fun is one thing and realistic is another. That's why there are different levels of Bunkai, Oyo, Henka Oyo and so on. At least the Bunkai on this video manage to give the feel of what a move is capable of and should aid the kata practice. But as Self Defence I'd opt for running everytime ;)
