Gazans hold prayers for Hamas leader Sinwar, mourn his death | ABS-CBN News

Palestinians in Gaza City and Khan Younis mourned on Friday (October 18) the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar during Friday prayers.

A Palestinian worshipper in Khan Younis, Akram Abou Marouf, said Sinwar’s death in battle is proof he was not hiding underground or abroad, but rather “fighting with other men on the front line.”

Sinwar, the architect of Hamas' deadly Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel that triggered the conflict in Gaza, was killed on Wednesday (October 17) in a gunfight with Israeli forces after a year-long manhunt, and his death was announced by Israel on Thursday (October 18).

Later on Friday, his death was also confirmed by Hamas.

His killing follows Israeli assassinations of other Hamas leaders and commanders, will deal a huge blow to the Islamist group which has faced relentless air strikes since it attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people, according to Israeli tallies.

He wasn't fighting, he was fleeing, carrying with him Israeli money worth US$10, 000 and IDs. He was already cornered in Rafah so he needed to leave Gaza, obviously going to Egypt. Of course it's easier to escape with just a few companions, it also makes it less obvious than say travelling with many bodyguards and hostages.
