Everybody knows what to expect from Pa. Ranjith, one of the directors committed to his school of ideology and  the film “Thangalan” does not disappoint the audience in this respect.

 

The film is based on the real events of the 19 century India. History repeats again and again mercilessly and it will continue so till the exploitation of the weak by the strong persists and the narrative discourse of this film is  a socio, cultural, economic and political structure where the absolute power corrupts absolutely.

 

The story is relevant even today as the struggle for liberty, equality and fraternity continues in one form or the other in all parts of our civilized world.

 

This film demands an intensely attentive viewing, as so many nonlinear, generational  events of a particular historical background are juxtaposed using the technique of the stream of consciousness with authentic settings, make up, attire and the music superbly composed with the instruments of the folks of the bygone eras by G.V. Prakash Kumar and no wonder it is even difficult for some to identify the lead actors in their very first introductory scene.

 

What a stellar performance by the protagonists lived on screen by Vikram and Parvathy as Thangalan as well as his predecessors including Aaraan and Gangamma respectively forgetting their screen images supported by another supporting actor Pasupathi as Gengupattar, in a role of a comic relief with an avowed desperate hope for Sanskritisation of his clan in the otherwise pathetic life story of the depressed, suppressed, exploited aborigines!

 

Many discerning viewers will not miss the symbolism of the statue that resembles the neo Buddhism, the wearing of the shirts and trousers by the male protagonist on only a very few occasions, while his brethren are half naked with their traditional attire throughout, the euphoric scene of wearing of the blouses by their female counterparts, signifying their historical struggles like paying of mulaivari tax to cover their breasts with clothes, the empowering role of knowing the language of the ruler, when the hero questions not only the translation of the ruler’s speech by his privileged stooges into the native tongue with the hidden agenda but also the villainy of the caste hierarchy to dehumanize the lowest stratum stamped as the untouchables, destined to lead a subhuman life, the preference of food, when a buffalo becomes an object of a sumptuous feast and the role of Aarathi by Malavika Mohanan, the great grand mother  who guards the treasure and her blood alone could make it gold.

 

There is a danger of the repetition of history when Thangalans of the previous generations use the treasure for the welfare of their own clan with a sense of revenge and retaliation, as the greed for gold has the destructive power of dehumanizing both the possessors and those who are denied of it.  Further when the suppressed are endowed partially with education and skills development in order to subserve the hidden agenda of their masters as their faithful subordinates as wage earners, there were no chances of their real, ideal empowerment and that could be the reason for the denial of genuine gold ultimately to the leadership of the clan. And just the shifting of the role play between the suppressor and the suppressed will not eliminate the suppression any time. 

So the ideal situation is when Thangalan of the present generation should make use of gold endowed with him by the guardian angel Aarati for the upliftment of his own clan for their own welfare and development to lead a normal life of the truly independent representative of the society in coexistence with all other sections. Hope if Aarathi’s boon sends this message clearly, then there is a scope for the establishment of the equitable, peaceful society. Does the film register it crystal clearly?  You have to watch the film critically to find it out.

Finally we should appreciate the director and his entire team for offering us a visual treat of an art film in a commercial frame extraordinarily.  However a tight editing, clear dubbing and catchy dialogues would have elevated its overall impact.
