this is actually reminding me of a situation I encountered... okay so, I have this friend.

she's always been on the peripheral of liking anime... she was an art kid in school and knew a lot of other art kids, so of course anime was on the radar, but she also has ADHD (like me) and while I'm good at sitting down and binging a show via hyperfocus, she can barely sit through two episodes at a time, even of something she really likes. she also really likes comedy but isn't as much into a narrative that goes too emotionally heavy for long periods of time without levity, she's very attuned to the aesthetics of a thing, and if the show can't be pretty, it should at least hook you with the story... and non-straight characters wouldn't hurt in the "keeping interest" department, but aren't a deal breaker.

I've successfully shown her Odd Taxi (12 episodes, good plot with lovable characters), we blasted through all the currently available episodes of Golden Kamuy (engaging plot, good humor, lots of fun shenanigans per episode to keep things fresh, hot men are a plus), and Dorohedoro (her favorite of the bunch, did everything right).

so when she comes home from her new-ish job, saying that she'd been talking with one of her managers about anime, and he wants her to watch Naruto.

I mean.

it's just the purest example, right? the purest example of somebody recommending a thing they like because it's an anime, without considering their audience, and whether or not this content would be compelling to them.

this guy picked one of the most wrong people to recommend a long-form shonen to. there's just a lot of reasons why this friend of mine wouldn't enjoy her time with Naruto. on the flip side, right now we're watching Kaguya-sama Love is War and it's going well.

so just like... PSA: ask your friends what genre they like. pick things that you actually think they'd enjoy. I love Made in Abyss, and Vinland Saga, but I think they both go a little too brutal for the group I watch anime with on the weekends. as much as I adore these pieces of media, I have to admit this, and I would only recommend them to the particular friends who I think would have an actually good time with them.

1 DONT WATCH SOMETHING WITH OVER 100 EPISODES.
2 DEPENDING ON WHAT THEY LIKE DONT START WITH AN ANIME WITH LOTS OF NAKED SCENES.
3 MAKE SURE ALL THE EPISODES ARE IN THEIR LANGUAGE.
4 DONT RECCOMEND SOMETHING DARK UNLESS THEIR REALLY INTO IT.

In my professional opinion the best beginner anime is absolutely one piece it’s so “short” and “easy to understand”

I normally recommend shows that generally loved, like One Punch Man and Death Note; if I got out of my way to recommend my personal favorites to people new to anime, I’m wrong.

Also, yeah, I also tell people “go at your own pace” or “you don’t have to like anime”, because people telling certain people that you have to like anime is a turn-off.
